The Minnesota Vikings announced on Wednesday that Brian Flores will continue as the team’s defensive coordinator, sealing a contract extension that maintains his position through the conclusion of the 2025 regular season. This decision solidifies Flores’s role under head coach Kevin O’Connell.

In a statement, O’Connell praised Flores’s leadership, noting, “Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximize their impact on the field. The identity of our defense is a reflection of his leadership and preparation. On a personal level, I’ve really valued the relationship we’ve built over the last three years. That shared trust, alignment, and high standard will continue to be critical to our success.”
Flores previously served as the Miami Dolphins head coach from 2019 to 2021, culminating in a 24-25 record across 49 games. Despite guiding the team to a 10-6 season in 2020, he fell short of securing a playoff berth, concluding the 2021 season with a record of 9-8.
In 2022, Flores took a significant step by suing the NFL and several teams, alleging the league was “rife with racism” and highlighting systemic racial discrimination in hiring practices. He claimed that certain teams conducted “sham” interviews for Black coaches under the Rooney Rule, asserting that there was little intention to hire these candidates.
As a result of his lawsuit, the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, and Dolphins were named among the defendants, drawing attention to a contentious issue in sports.
A crucial development surfaced in August 2025, when a federal appeals court ruled that Flores’s lawsuit against the NFL regarding racial discrimination could proceed to trial. This ruling countered the league’s efforts to push for arbitration, which would have placed Commissioner Roger Goodell in a position to serve as the arbitrator.
The appellate decision, authored by Circuit Judge Jose A. Cabranes, determined that the NFL’s arbitration process did not provide appropriate protections under the Federal Arbitration Act, indicating that it “provides for arbitration in name only.”
Under Flores’s guidance, the Vikings exhibited a strong defensive performance in the recent season, ranking as the third-best defense in the NFL by allowing an average of 282.6 yards per game. Additionally, they secured the seventh-best ranking in points allowed per game at 19.6.
