Persistent Hum Disturbs West Haven Residents Leading to Community Outcry

A low-frequency hum has unsettled residents of West Haven, Connecticut, prompting widespread concern and sleepless nights among those affected. Locals have described the sound as everything from irritating to excruciating, contributing to a growing sense of anxiety.

For months, the residents, situated along the picturesque Long Island Sound, have speculated that local industries might be responsible for the troubling noise. In response, they have launched a petition that gathered over 140 signatures, compelling the city council to allocate $16,000 for an independent acoustic investigation.

The petition states, “For years, our community has been plagued by a constant or intermittent humming noise and low-frequency vibrations affecting multiple areas of town. This disturbing phenomenon occurs at all hours, disrupting our ability to sleep, concentrate, and enjoy life to its fullest.”

Furthermore, the petition highlights claims of increased levels of stress, anxiety, and physical discomfort among residents. With numerous complaints about the noise over the years, locals are desperate for answers, stating, “The source of this noise remains unresolved. … We are deeply concerned about the long-term health consequences this persistent noise pollution imposes on us.”

Health Concerns Linked to Low-Frequency Noise

Experts indicate that mental health issues tied to low-frequency hums are a common phenomenon. Interestingly, not all residents hear the noise, creating a divide within the community. John Carrano, West Haven’s commissioner of human resources, reported the sound peaks near his residence. However, he noted that his own children remain oblivious to it.

“My house is the loudest of all the different locations in the area,” he stated. “I constantly test in the mornings and evenings. If I observe an elevated decibel reading, I will check the industrial zone nearby.”

Community Concerns and Official Response

With nearly 56,000 residents, there are varying opinions regarding the mysterious hum. Mayor Dorinda Borer addressed the issue, affirming, “This is a quality-of-life issue, no doubt. We want our people to be healthy and not impacted by noise pollution.”

To tackle the problem, the hired acoustic firm plans to deploy ten microphones throughout the city to monitor the sound continuously over seven days. Carrano explained that the government officials must choose a suitable week with low wind and no precipitation to conduct the investigation effectively.

“People perceive the hum differently,” Carrano shared. “While some don’t notice it, others hear it and remain unbothered. However, there are those who find it very disturbing.”

Personal Accounts of Distress

One resident remarked that the noise has affected her mental state, even leading her to question her sanity since her family members do not hear what she does. Rosemary Brooks expressed her frustration at a recent council meeting, stating, “I’ve been hearing this noise for over four years, and I thought it was just me going a little cuckoo. But it’s reached the point where it just gets into your chest.”

Bennett Brooks, president of Brooks Acoustics Corporation, emphasized the need for a resolution, stating, “It’s a problem that should be rectified. Lower frequencies are much harder to block than higher frequency sounds.”

Regulatory Challenges and Global Parallels

While Connecticut has numerous noise ordinances, few government regulations specifically address low-frequency noise. Similar hums have been reported globally, including locations such as Taos, New Mexico; Auckland, New Zealand; and Windsor, Ontario.

In many cases, these sounds are traced back to factories or power plants, but some sources remain elusive. For instance, the hum in Taos has puzzled researchers for decades, leading to widespread interest and investigation.

Caution in Making Conclusions

The mayor of West Haven is cautious about jumping to conclusions regarding the source of the noise. “We have to ensure everything is in order before we approach any specific company about citing them,” Borer explained.

Kimberly Nunes, a local resident and the author of the petition, has voiced her concerns about the impact on her family. “It’s affecting my mental health, my sleep, my well-being,” she stated. “I’ve noticed that my children are also significantly affected, and even my pets have started pacing and staring around the house.”
