John Carrano, West Haven’s commissioner of human resources, noted that his own children are unaffected by the sound, despite his home being among the loudest in the vicinity.

“My house is the loudest of all the different locations in the area,” Carrano lamented. “I would test in the morning and test in the evening. If I observed an elevated decibel reading, I would check the industrial zone.”

In a city of nearly 56,000, opinions about the mysterious hum vary significantly. Mayor Dorinda Borer acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating, “This is a quality-of-life issue, no doubt. We don’t want people to be impacted. We don’t want [people’s] health to be compromised.”

The acoustic firm commissioned for this investigation is set to deploy 10 microphones for continuous monitoring over a seven-day period. Carrano emphasized the importance of selecting a week with low wind and no precipitation for optimal testing conditions.

Different residents experience the hum in contrasting ways. Some are oblivious to its presence, while others find it distressing. One resident expressed feelings of disorientation when she heard the sound, claiming her family could not hear it at all.

“I’ve been hearing this noise for over four years, and I thought it was just me going a little cuckoo,” resident Rosemary Brooks said during a recent council meeting. “But it’s gotten to the point where it just gets in your chest.”

Bennett Brooks, president of Brooks Acoustics Corporation, a company with operations in both Connecticut and Florida, emphasized the importance of addressing this issue. He pointed out that lower frequency sounds pose challenges for mitigation compared to higher frequency noises.

He elaborated, “It can be very annoying. It’s as if it shakes the dishes and windows in your kitchen.” In Connecticut, there are numerous noise ordinances; however, few specifically address low-frequency noise, creating a regulatory gap.

Strikingly similar hums have been reported across the globe, from Taos, New Mexico, to Auckland, New Zealand, and even Windsor, Ontario. These hums often correlate with industrial activity, although their origin is not always easily identifiable.

Factors such as high-pressure gas pipelines or mechanical devices could play a role in the emergence of such sounds. However, some cases, like the mysterious hum in Taos, have baffled researchers for decades.

Mayor Borer expressed caution about jumping to conclusions regarding the source of the noise. She remarked, “We have to cross our T’s and dot our I’s before we approach [any specific] company and hold them accountable.”

Kimberly Nunes, a resident of the affected neighborhood and a key figure behind the petition, described the toll the sound has taken on her family. “It’s affecting my mental health, my sleep, my well-being,” Nunes revealed. “I’ve noticed that my pets tend to pace and stare, indicating their distress as well.”
