Charlie McAvoy Highlights ‘Heated Rivalry’ and its Role in Hockey’s Inclusivity

The documentary series ‘Heated Rivalry’ continues to generate buzz since its November premiere and U.S. streaming launch.

After the Boston Bruins achieved a 4-3 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, defenseman Charlie McAvoy spoke about the series’ significant impact on the sport and its inclusivity efforts.

McAvoy expressed his optimism, stating, “I think it’s growing, I think the league has done great things,” in reference to the National Hockey League’s progress toward promoting inclusion. He emphasized the Bruins’ dedication to fostering a welcoming atmosphere. “Here within our room, we’ve tried to do things as well to echo that message and to make everyone feel safe and comfortable within the game. It’s very important,” he noted.

He acknowledged the series’ positive influence, saying, “I haven’t seen it, but from what I’ve heard about that show, it’s been growing the game a lot and in support of that community, so that stuff’s all awesome. It’s awesome for hockey. It’s awesome for everybody. So, I’m happy that tonight, that we won on this night. And hopefully a lot of people feel the support of the Bruins.”

McAvoy also highlighted community feedback, adding, “I’ve heard so much support from people within those communities that it means a lot to them. So, it’s the least that we can do to show our support and show that we’re all on the same team.”

Series Overview

‘Heated Rivalry’ is a television adaptation of Rachel Reid’s popular novel series titled ‘Game Changers.’ The show centers around a fictional off-ice romance between Shane Hollander, a Canadian hockey player, and Ilya Rozanov, a Russian professional athlete.

Notable Endorsements

The series has even gained acclaim from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who admitted to binge-watching all episodes and praised the storytelling quality. “I’ve watched all six episodes. I binged it in one night,” Bettman shared last week at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

He remarked on the storyline’s depth, saying, “I thought the storyline was very compelling and a lot of fun, because I could see where they were picking at things that we had in the past, whether it was Olympics in Sochi or the All-Star Game in Tampa. It was very well done.”

Actors Take on New Roles

Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, the lead actors in ‘Heated Rivalry,’ will serve as torchbearers for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics. The actors, who portrayed Olympic rivals on-screen, will have the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay, highlighting their transition from fictional athletes to real-life symbolic figures.

While neither will compete on the ice in the Olympic Games, their moment in the spotlight will come during the torch relay. The details concerning when and where they will take part remain undisclosed.

Upcoming Olympic Details

As of Thursday, the Olympic torch was in Trieste, Italy, having 13 cities left on its journey to Milan. The highly anticipated 2026 Winter Games are scheduled to occur from February 6 to February 22.

Future of ‘Heated Rivalry’

Fans of the series have something to celebrate, as ‘Heated Rivalry’ has already been renewed for a second season. This early renewal reflects its success and the growing dialogue surrounding inclusivity in sports.

Looking ahead, the Bruins will stay at home for their next matchup against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
