In his address to the team, Rhodes stated, “I’m Officer Rhodes. I’m head of security for Coach Prime.” He outlined specific precautions for players to take to ensure their safety and that of their coach.

Rhodes conveyed an important message to new players transitioning into the program. He said, “When y’all head up to the facilities in the morning, be mindful of who comes in with you, especially on the elevator. Don’t let somebody coerce you into scanning them up on the floor, because everybody’s trying to get to Coach Prime. Not all of these individuals have good intentions.”

This emphasis on awareness is crucial, according to Rhodes, who continued, “So just be mindful of that, don’t prop open any doors, because my philosophy is, if the doors open, they will come through. Then they’re gonna have to meet me.”

Sanders himself acknowledged this reality, stating, “We get death threats all the time. Why? I’m a Black man making it happen, making things move, making all that happen. “Cat’s out of the bag, all right. I think I’ve got more blood clots,” he stated. “It don’t make sense. I’m hurting like crazy… I’m not getting blood to my leg. That’s why my leg is throbbing.” This revelation further highlights the ongoing struggles that Sanders faces beyond his role as a coach.

In 2021, Sanders underwent surgery that resulted in the amputation of two toes on his left foot due to complications associated with blood clots. At that time, he was leading the program at Jackson State. In 2023, during the Pac-12 media day, Sanders had to address another instance of blood clots in his right leg, necessitating further surgical intervention to correct curved toes.

“I’m going to go in there [surgery], and I’m going to get some of the best sleep in the world for, I think, four hours, the surgery is going to be,” Sanders shared recently, reflecting on his resolve despite the challenges he faces.

Sanders also mentioned, “I’ve never been high a day in my life. I’ve never drank, smoked, or anything. But when I get those surgeries, I am there on time.” His determination to confront these issues head-on speaks volumes about his character and commitment to his health.
