However, recent warnings from security experts highlight a potentially grave risk that arises from clicking on malicious links. Researchers at Varonis have identified a newly discovered tactic termed “Reprompt.” This method illustrates how cybercriminals can manipulate Copilot sessions to extract sensitive data without raising any immediate red flags on your screen. Essentially, this technique permits attackers to insert covert instructions into what appears to be a standard Copilot link, leveraging the AI to perform actions on their behalf.
Understanding the implications of this attack is vital for users. Microsoft Copilot is integrated with your Microsoft account, which allows it access to your previous conversations, your inquiries, and various personal information associated with your account. While protective measures typically prevent sensitive data leaks, the Reprompt technique unveils a pathway to bypass some of these safeguards.
The attack begins with a seemingly innocuous click. When a user opens a crafted Copilot link, often transmitted via email or other messaging platforms, Copilot blindly processes embedded hidden instructions. This process requires no additional installations or evident prompts. Remarkably, even closing the Copilot tab does not terminate the threat immediately, as the session remains active for a certain duration.
Importantly, Varonis discovered that Copilot can accept inquiries through specific parameters embedded in its URL. This means that attackers can conceal commands within the URL, prompting Copilot to execute them as soon as the page loads. This initial breach could allow unauthorized access to your data.
Simply being able to send instructions through a disguised link isn’t sufficient, as Copilot has standard measures to prevent data leakage. Researchers utilized a combination of methods to circumvent these barriers. First, they injected commands directly into the Copilot interface through the link, permitting data retrieval that would normally be restricted.
Next, they deployed a tactic termed “try twice,” where Copilot applies stricter checks on the first request. By persuading Copilot to repeat its actions, it inadvertently bypasses its own security protocols on the second attempt.
Finally, they demonstrated the potential for Copilot to continue receiving instructions from a remote server managed by attackers. Each response from Copilot can inform the subsequent request, leading to an ongoing and concealed exchange where data is exfiltrated bit by bit. From the user’s perspective, everything appears normal.
In light of these findings, Varonis responsibly alerted Microsoft about the Reprompt vulnerabilities. The tech giant addressed these weaknesses in its January 2026 Patch Tuesday updates. Fortunately, there is no evidence that Reprompt tactics have been executed in real-world scenarios prior to the implementation of the fix. Nonetheless, this research exposes a larger concern regarding AI assistants that possess access, memory, and the ability to act autonomously. When combined, these traits amplify the risk if preventative measures fail.
This vulnerability primarily affected Copilot Personal users. In contrast, Microsoft 365 Copilot, designed for enterprise use, incorporates additional security protections such as auditing, data loss prevention, and administrator controls.
As a Microsoft representative affirmed, “We appreciate Varonis Threat Labs for responsibly reporting this issue. We have rolled out protections that rectify the situation described and are implementing further measures to enhance safeguards against similar techniques. This forms part of our comprehensive defense strategy.”

Using a password manager can significantly enhance your security. Such tools create and securely store strong, unique passwords for various services. This means that even if attackers access your session data or credentials, having distinct passwords will prevent a single breach from jeopardizing your entire digital identity. Many modern password managers also alert you if you visit suspicious or fraudulent sites.
Additionally, verify if your email has previously appeared in data breaches. An effective password manager may feature a built-in breach scanner to check whether your email or passwords have been compromised. If you discover a match, promptly change any reused passwords and secure those accounts with new, strong credentials.
Implementing two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an essential layer of protection. Even if attackers gain partial access to your session, 2FA requires an extra verification step. This significantly complicates unauthorized actions within Copilot or other Microsoft services.
Consider reducing the amount of personal data available online. Data broker sites often collect and sell private information, making it easier for attackers to exploit your accounts. Using data-removal services can help eliminate personal information from these databases, thereby shrinking your digital footprint and limiting the potential for targeted attacks.
Modern antivirus solutions do more than file scanning. They play a crucial role in identifying phishing threats, malicious scripts, and suspicious browsing behavior. Since attacks like Reprompt can initiate with a benign click, having real-time protection can prevent future incidents, especially when faced with sophisticated assault strategies.
