Chris Pratt recently opened up about a pivotal moment in his acting career, revealing an unexpected piece of advice from director Bennett Miller while filming the acclaimed movie Moneyball.
During an engaging discussion on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, the 46-year-old actor shared insights from his time on set. He described how Miller’s direction led to one of the most memorable experiences of his career.
Pratt portrayed Scott Hatteberg in Moneyball, a role that required him to tap into frustration while playing first base. He recalled the director’s advice that would significantly influence his performance.
“I was supposed to be really frustrated because I couldn’t catch the ball,” Pratt explained. “They had taught me to field for weeks, and I got pretty good at it. But during the scene, I was feeling competitive and sweating. Bennett came up to me and said, ‘Just stop being such an a–hole.'”
Initially, the actor felt angered by the remark. However, he later recognized that the harsh note was just what he needed to bring authenticity to the scene, noting that it ultimately contributed to a pivotal shot in the film.
Pratt articulated how Miller knew how to provoke the right reaction from him. “That anger was what he wanted to see in me,” he said. “He didn’t truly mean for me to stop being an a–hole. He understood how to push my buttons to evoke a feeling that I don’t express easily: anger. It turned out to be one of the best pieces of direction I ever received, even if it was also one of the worst.”
This candid reflection underscores the complexities of the acting profession. The pressure to convey authentic emotions can lead actors to confront personal challenges in order to deliver compelling performances.
In Moneyball, viewers witness Hatteberg’s journey as he reinvents himself after a career-threatening elbow injury forced him to move from catcher to first baseman. Through Pratt’s compelling portrayal, the film showcases the struggles faced by athletes attempting to adapt to significant changes in their careers.
Beyond his reflections on Moneyball, Pratt shared stories from his life before fame. He recounted being discovered by actress and director Rae Dawn Chong while serving food at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Maui. At just 19 years old, Pratt found his path toward a Hollywood career, albeit with a rather unusual name history.
Pratt humorously described how a mix-up with his name tag led colleagues to call him “Christo” for an extended period. “I had a name tag that said Christopher at Bubba Gump,” he recalled. “But the ‘PHER’ got rubbed off, so it just said ‘Christo’. New employees thought that was my name. At one point, I even considered going by Christo as I started my acting career.”
Ultimately, Pratt chose to be known as Chris. However, he conveyed his discomfort with the moniker during an interview with SiriusXM’s Pop Culture Spotlight in 2022. “No one calls me Chris,” he admitted. “It felt weird. It’s not my name. Don’t call me Chris.”
Outside of his acting career, Pratt is a devoted family man. He is married to Katherine Schwarzenegger, the daughter of iconic actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Together, they are raising a beautiful family with three children: Lyla, 5, Eloise, 3, and Ford, 1. In addition, Pratt has a 13-year-old son, Jack, from his previous marriage to actress Anna Faris.
The actor recently gained attention for sharing a fascinating gift that Schwarzenegger gave him and his wife for Christmas during an episode of The Graham Norton Show. Pratt described a striking 6-foot by 8-foot portrait featuring himself, Katherine, and their children, all depicted in a festive setting with Schwarzenegger as Santa Claus.
Pratt’s experience on Moneyball highlighted the importance of resilience and adaptability in both performance and life. His reflections reveal the depths actors must explore to portray believable characters, demonstrating that every note given to them can be a lesson in growth and authenticity.
As his career continues to flourish, Chris Pratt’s journey from a struggling waiter to a renowned actor inspires many, reminding us that with the right guidance and the willingness to face challenges head-on, success is within reach.
