This week, Lt. Gen. John Brennan, the Deputy Commander of U.S. Africa Command and a veteran of multiple U.S. conflicts, visited Nigeria within a delegation focused on counterterrorism efforts. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital from Abuja, he discussed the ongoing military efforts to combat the Islamic State and other extremist groups.
Brennan shed light on the U.S. military’s involvement, stating, “We continue to provide the Nigerians with intelligence support, airborne ISR, and other capabilities that enhance their accuracy in combat operations. Following the strikes, the Nigerian forces had notable success in Sokoto due to the disruption created across the terror networks.”
He elaborated further, saying, “A significant number of terrorists chose to flee the region, enabling Nigerian forces to apprehend several individuals.” He emphasized the importance of empowering Nigeria to independently resolve its security challenges, viewing this as a mutually beneficial arrangement for regional stability.
Brennan acknowledged the severity of the terrorist threat, noting, “They have a significant terror issue, and we’re focused on limiting their ability to cross borders and harm civilians.”

Illia Djadi, a persecution analyst for Open Doors, expressed a belief that the recent U.S. military actions have had a profound effect. Djadi stated, “The targets were effectively struck, impacting the operational capabilities of armed groups. The terrorists are now dispersing in various directions due to the pressure.”
He explained that the attacks have instilled fear among the terrorists who previously operated with impunity. Djadi pointed out, “This shift signifies a moment of realization for these groups that they are not invulnerable.”
Djadi noted the repercussions extend beyond Nigeria’s borders, affecting countries like Niger and Mali. “Regional actors are observing these developments closely. If Nigeria can sustain such operations, nearby nations might also benefit in addressing their security threats,” he said.
Strengthening U.S.-Nigeria Cooperation
During a recent meeting involving U.S. and Nigerian officials in Abuja, which included Brennan, discussions centered on enhancing collaboration to combat violence against Christians. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker emphasized the importance of joint efforts to hold perpetrators accountable, mitigate killings, and ensure safety for religious communities.
This meeting occurred shortly after a disturbing event where over 160 worshippers were abducted during Sunday services at several churches in Kaduna state, highlighting the persistent danger faced by Christian communities in the region.
President Trump indicated earlier this month that further military action could be warranted if attacks on Christians continue, underscoring a commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations.

Rabiu Ibrahim, Nigeria’s special assistant to the minister of information, expressed gratitude for the U.S. support, framing it within a global fight against terrorism. He noted, “The actions taken by U.S. military assets in our region are viewed as tactical elements in a comprehensive strategy geared towards combating threats to our national security.”
Ibrahim emphasized that the collaborative relationship is not merely transactional but focuses on building local capabilities, stating, “Our partnership involves enhancing Nigerian forces’ proficiency, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing and operational effectiveness.”
