A prominent Democratic strategist has described the Texas U.S. Senate race as presenting a stark choice between top contenders, amidst ongoing Republican infighting that marks a bitter primary season.
Long-serving Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn is currently in a contentious battle against state Attorney General Ken Paxton and Houston-area Congressman Wesley Hunt in the GOP primary. The outcome will determine who challenges either rising Democratic figure state Representative James Talarico or progressive Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in the upcoming November election.
Over the past thirty years, both Senate seats in Texas have remained Republican strongholds. However, Democrats are increasingly confident in their ability to flip one seat this year, a development that could critically impact the GOP’s prospects of retaining Senate control.
Eric Koch, founder of Downfield Strategies, shared insights with Fox News Digital, suggesting that while Cornyn holds incumbency, Paxton currently possesses an advantage in the primary race.
Emerging Political Trends Signaling Change
Koch remarked, “Ken Paxton clearly has the momentum in this primary because he represents the MAGA choice for Senate in Texas.” He further explained that the contrast in the electoral landscape is pronounced if the general election pits Paxton against Talarico.
According to Koch, “One candidate is a fresh face eager to connect with voters across the political spectrum, while the other has established a reputation as a career politician tangled in controversy over corruption allegations.”
Paxton, who has held the position of Texas’ attorney general since 2015, faced a brief suspension earlier this year due to an impeachment process related to accusations of abuse of power. He has maintained that the impeachment was fundamentally a political witch hunt orchestrated by the GOP establishment.
Cornyn, a Senate member since 2002, chairs key committees, including Judiciary and Intelligence. Despite his established position and backing from prominent organizations such as the National Republican Senatorial Committee, recent polling reveals Paxton leading Cornyn by a slim margin, with Emerson College Polling indicating Paxton at 27 percent compared to Cornyn’s 26 percent. Hunt lags behind at 16 percent, and 29 percent of voters remain undecided.
Even while trailing in polls, Hunt, an Army veteran in his second Congressional term, argues he is ideally positioned to replace Cornyn and uphold the Republican dominance in Texas.
“Cornyn’s time is over, and most voters understand that, except for him,” Hunt remarked in a conversation with Fox News Digital.
Debate Disputes Ignite Tensions
Continuing his critique, Hunt criticized Cornyn for repeatedly avoiding offers for debates, stating, “If Senator Cornyn is genuinely interested in a fifth term—an absurd notion considering his long tenure—he must step into the light and defend his record on a debate stage.”
He added that Cornyn’s “last remaining strategy appears to be clinging to a Trump endorsement,” which Hunt doubts will materialize.
“I offer a vision of a new generation of leadership, while Senator Cornyn, approaching 74, continues to offer the same stagnation that Texans have endured for over two decades,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Matt Mackowiak, a senior adviser for Cornyn’s campaign, dismissed Hunt’s criticisms, branding him as “Woke Wesley,” and questioned his seriousness as a candidate due to his notably low attendance at crucial House votes this year.
A recent GovTrack analysis indicated that Hunt missed 44 out of 48 votes in January, amounting to over 90 percent absenteeism. This record significantly exceeds the median 2.0 percent of missed votes among currently serving representatives.
Future Accountability in Focus
Mackowiak also redirected criticism towards Paxton, expressing eagerness for a head-to-head contest after March 3rd, where he anticipates that Paxton will be scrutinized for previous controversies and ethical concerns.
Paralleling the tone, Paxton labeled Cornyn as “an old man who is visibly out of touch,
