Tragic Loss of Three Brothers in Icy Pond Incident Highlights Winter Dangers

In a heartbreaking incident during a severe winter storm in Texas, three young brothers tragically lost their lives after attempting to help one another in an icy pond. Authorities and family members have shared accounts that detail the heartbreaking events that unfolded.

The victims were identified as elementary school students, ages 6, 8, and 9. This devastating accident took place in Bonham, a city located approximately 60 miles northeast of Dallas. The family narratives reveal a desperate effort made by the children’s mother, alongside a neighbor, to rescue them.

The Incident

The lake tragedy began when the youngest, 6-year-old Howard, fell beneath the surface. His older brothers, ages 8 and 9, immediately plunged into the freezing water to assist him. Cheyenne Hangaman, the boys’ mother, recounted her frantic attempt to save her sons.

“I started running toward the pond and I jumped in. I tried to save them while also trying to keep myself alive,” she stated. Tragically, she quickly became overwhelmed by the icy conditions. “As soon as I jumped in, I locked up. I couldn’t do anything,” Hangaman expressed, illustrating the perilous nature of the moment.

Adding to the urgency, a local high school football coach joined the rescue efforts. Unfortunately, the situation escalated quickly, and Hangaman had to be rescued by a neighbor. “It was one of me and three of them, and they all needed me at one time. I just couldn’t… I couldn’t save them,” she recalled as she mourned her profound loss.

Rescue Efforts

The courageous actions of bystanders proved critical. First responders, along with the neighbor, managed to retrieve the 8-year-old and the 9-year-old from the frigid water. Despite immediate medical attention, both boys were pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

Sadly, their 6-year-old brother never resurfaced. His body was later recovered after an extensive search by emergency teams.

Community Outpouring of Grief

As she comes to terms with the loss of her three sons, Hangaman shared fond memories of her children, highlighting their unique personalities and the joyful moments they brought into her life.

She described her oldest son, EJ, as a sports enthusiast who was passionate about football and his appearance. Kaleb was known for his incredible demeanor, being the sweetest child anyone could meet. Howard, the youngest, had an infectious personality that could liven up any room. Tragically, it was Howard’s playful spirit that led him into the icy water, leading to this disaster.

In the wake of this tragedy, Dr. Lance Hamlin, Superintendent of the Bonham Independent School District, addressed the community in a letter. He expressed profound sorrow over the loss, something he referred to as an “unimaginable loss.”

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we inform our community of the tragic passing of three elementary students. We are devastated by this unimaginable loss, and our thoughts are with the family, friends, and all who knew and loved these children,” Hamlin wrote. The district is currently providing support for students and staff coping with this incident.

Context of Winter Hazards

The devastating incident highlights the dangers posed by winter weather. The same winter storm that affected the brothers also led to another tragedy in North Texas. On the same weekend, 16-year-old Elizabeth Angle died in a sledding accident in Frisco when a Jeep struck a curb, causing the sled to crash into a tree. This underscores the heightened risks associated with winter activities during severe weather conditions.

Authorities continue to remind the public about the serious dangers that snow and ice present. Police have issued warnings regarding the treacherous conditions, urging caution as these elements can lead to severe accidents.

A Call for Safety

The nationwide winter storm brought heavy snow and crippling ice to many regions, including Texas, over the weekend. Consequently, the entire area experienced icy roads and hazardous walking surfaces, posing risks for residents.

Local police departments are actively investigating and advising communities on maintaining safety as the icy aftermath of the storm presents ongoing challenges.

As families remember the lives lost, community members are also encouraged to come together to provide support. The devastating story of these three brothers serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers that winter weather can instigate. Their legacy will live on in the memories of their family and all who were touched by their lives.
