The actress from the Star Trek franchise asserts that the conservative backlash is prompting the series to embrace its identity as “super woke” even more fervently. This declaration comes in response to critics who believe the franchise is alienating its core audience, with prominent figures like the White House deputy chief of staff suggesting the show is losing its traditional appeal.
Gina Yashere, known for her role as Lura Thok in the new Paramount+ series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, shared her thoughts online following a segment of Bill Maher’s show, which delved into this ongoing debate.
In her remarks on social media, Yashere pointed out what she perceives as the source of the criticism. She stated, “All of the hatred coming at us is from fragile, angry White men, talking about either our non-whiteness or our bodies.” This statement reflects her personal experience with the backlash the show is receiving.
Maher’s show included commentary from Stephen Miller, who called the series “tragic” and suggested a return to creative control for original Star Trek actor William Shatner. Miller’s criticism echoes a broader trend among conservative audiences who are questioning the franchise’s focus on diversity. This includes showcasing varied body types, ethnicities, and sexual orientations in the new series.
Yashere’s character enters a same-sex relationship with Jett Reno, played by Tig Notaro. Addressing her character’s relationships, Yashere openly discussed her own sexuality in a recent social media post. She humorously remarked, “I was practically born wearing a tool belt,” emphasizing her identity and the choices she makes within the narrative.
The actress took her defiant stance even further, proclaiming, “We woke. Wokey wokey. Super woke. Wokest of the woke!” This playful yet serious declaration illustrates her willingness to embrace the label often assigned to her and the franchise. Yashere has become an outspoken defender of the show’s thematic focus, which she believes aligns with the franchise’s original intent.
During an appearance on CNN, Yashere declared that Star Trek has always been a “woke” series, explaining that this term should not carry negative connotations. She described being woke as a state of awareness regarding societal issues, asserting that it reflects the franchise’s commitment to relevant and contemporary themes.
Yashere reciprocated after Maher joked that the cast did not match his perception of
