After nearly ten months in custody, Griner was released as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange that included controversial negotiations. Notably, former President Joe Biden’s involvement came after significant discussions with Griner’s wife and her manager at the White House, highlighting the political dimensions of her release.

Reflecting on her release, Griner voiced her admiration for Biden, calling him “a personal hero of mine” for facilitating her return home on December 8, 2022.
