FIRST ON FOX: The White House has launched a new website page featuring a comprehensive map of the United States that highlights states opting out of a federal school choice tax credit slated to begin in 2027. This initiative boldly names certain Democratic governors as ‘failures’ for opposing the program.
The administration’s message is clear. President Trump is committed to lowering education costs for American families. However, it emphasizes that children in various states will not reap the benefits unless their governors take decisive action. The website states, ‘Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cut Act, parents choosing the private, charter, or public school that best meets their child’s needs will soon receive financial assistance.’
The Trump administration is actively encouraging states to join the new federal K-12 scholarship tax credit program. This initiative, referenced in the so-called ‘big, beautiful bill,’ warns that families might miss out on significant benefits if their state leaders resist participation. On a recent Monday, the Department of Education proudly announced that 23 states have already opted into what it describes as the ‘largest national expansion of education freedom in history’— providing families with diverse and more affordable educational options.
Under the Education Freedom Tax Credit, taxpayers can potentially receive up to $1,700 back in federal tax credits by donating to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations, or SGOs. Instead of sending this money to Washington as income taxes, these donations are converted into K-12 scholarships. Families can then utilize these scholarships for various expenses related to public, private, or charter school education.
The newly launched website elaborates, ‘Beginning January 1, 2027, Americans can alleviate their tax obligations by contributing to an approved Scholarship Granting Organization. However, families may not receive scholarships if their governors block participation in their state. It is essential for your voice to be heard to ensure governors understand their responsibility to provide all families with affordable access to the education that best suits their child’s individual needs.’
Highlighted on the website are several governors who are reportedly resisting the program. Among them are Oregon’s Tina Kotek, North Carolina’s Josh Stein, New Mexico’s Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Wisconsin’s Tony Evers.
The website urges, ‘Urge Your Governor to Opt-In to Your Child’s Future,’ indicating that these Democratic leaders have been branded as failures for their reluctance to support the initiative.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis stands out as the first Democrat to opt into the program, making the announcement in December 2025. He noted that he would ‘be crazy not to’ support such an initiative, as it empowers more parents to afford after-school and summer programs for their children.
Despite these benefits, many Democratic leaders continue to voice concerns about the implications of expanding school choice. Critics argue that such policies could divert funding from public schools and diminish accountability. These apprehensions are often echoed by teachers’ unions and various education advocates.
As school choice takes center stage, urban school districts are facing challenges as parents increasingly seek better educational options for their children. Competition for student enrollment is escalating, and some districts are struggling to retain students amidst this shifting landscape.
The new website includes an informative map illustrating the 23 states that have opted into the program versus the 27 that have not. Its release coincides with National School Choice Week, running from January 25 through January 31, underscoring the government’s aggressive push for school choice in Trump’s anticipated second term.
The Education Department announced a substantial investment of $500 million in charter schools and expressed its commitment to supporting the Education Freedom Tax Credit. The department is also encouraging states to utilize federal funds and waivers to expand parental options and improve low-performing schools.
Expanding school choice and safeguarding parental rights has emerged as a priority for Trump’s reelection campaign. He aims to decentralize federal control over public education, restoring authority to states and parents.
In 2025, Trump emphasized his commitment: ‘I want every parent in America to be empowered to send their child to public, private, charter, or faith-based school of their choice. The time for universal school choice has come. I will leverage every power I possess to ensure parents have this right.’
As the debate over school choice continues, the Trump administration remains steadfast in its promotion of educational freedom, positioning itself in direct contrast to Democratic leaders resisting these changes.
