Jon Gruden has expressed a keen desire to return to coaching, yet he has drawn a firm line regarding the opportunities he is willing to consider.
Gruden, famously known for his past role with the Las Vegas Raiders, parted ways with the organization during his third year of a 10-year contract. This severance came after revelations that he had used racist, sexist, and homophobic language in various emails.
Since departing from the Raiders, Gruden has engaged with Barstool Sports and has been actively seeking a chance to re-enter the football scene. However, one franchise stands out as a team he is not interested in joining.
Reports indicate that the New York Jets reached out to Gruden regarding a potential position on their coaching staff, but he declined the offer without hesitation.
While the details of the position remain unclear, it is evident that Gruden would have introduced a level of experience that is not commonly found within the league. The news was first reported by The Athletic.
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports and an ardent fan of the New England Patriots, referred to the Jets’ offer as one of the most insulting job propositions in history.
The Jets have seen a significant overhaul in their coaching staff, with only the head coach remaining in place. The franchise recently parted ways with several assistants, including both offensive and defensive coordinators, after a disappointing season.
In the past season, the Jets recorded a dismal 3-14 record, marking a historical low as they became the first team in NFL history to finish a season without an interception. Additionally, they faced losses in their final five games by margins of at least 23 points.
Many speculated that these setbacks may have played a role in the subsequent coaching changes. Following a series of discussions about modifying his role, Tanner Engstrand and the Jets agreed to separate.
The Jets’ quarterback carousel this past season also contributed to their struggles. After an injury sidelined Tyrod Taylor, rookie Brady Cook stepped in to start games late in the year.
During the trade deadline, the Jets made significant roster changes. They traded key players, including Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, in exchange for draft capital from both the Indianapolis Colts and the Dallas Cowboys. The compensation included future draft picks that could potentially bolster the team’s roster.
In a bid to reclaim his career, Gruden has initiated legal action against the NFL, accusing the league of operating a malicious campaign aimed at sabotaging his professional image. These allegations stemmed from the infamous leaked emails he sent during his time as an analyst and commentator.
In August, a notable ruling from the Nevada Supreme Court allowed Gruden’s case to proceed in court rather than arbitration. Subsequently, in October, the court unanimously denied the NFL’s request for a rehearing of this decision, advancing Gruden’s legal battle.
Gruden has remained connected to the sport. He provided guidance to Derek Carr during his tenure with the New Orleans Saints and recently engaged with the Detroit Lions. At Barstool Sports, he participated in sessions with aspiring quarterbacks in his rejuvenated program, Gruden’s QB Camp.
Reflecting on his future, Gruden shared aspirations about coaching once more. He expressed hope that connections from his past will give him an opportunity, stating he would even consider coaching at a junior high school level.
“I don’t care if I coach at Jones Junior High. I’m going to coach again,” Gruden declared. “I’m still coaching, even if it’s not with an official team. I undertake private assignments, and I stay engaged with the game, donning gear and supporting teams in secrecy.”
