Shawna Collins, a cherished staff member of Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church, tragically lost her life in a private jet crash in Maine this past Sunday. Fondly described as possessing a beautiful spirit, Collins was one of six individuals who died in the incident.
The Houston-based Lakewood Church confirmed the situation to The Christian Post. At the time of the crash, Collins was traveling for personal business outside of Lakewood. The Bombardier Challenger 600 jet, bound for Paris, had paused to refuel amidst challenging weather conditions, including light snow, mild winds, and near-freezing temperatures. As a severe winter storm approached Bangor, Maine, the jet tragically flipped and caught fire during its departure.
Lakewood Church expressed profound sorrow regarding Collins’s passing. A spokesperson shared, “We can confirm with great sadness that a beloved member of our church staff and treasured friend, Shawna Collins, was on the plane that crashed in Maine on Sunday evening.” The statement continued, “She was a light that brightened our days, and she possessed a beautiful spirit that lifted everyone she met. We loved Shawna dearly, and we will miss her more than words can express. We pray for her entire family and offer them our love and support during this difficult time.”
Reports reveal that the plane was registered to a partner at Arnold and Itkin Trial Lawyers, a personal injury law firm based in Houston. Alongside Collins, attorney Tara Arnold, who is the wife of founding partner Kurt Arnold, and Chef Nick Mastrascusa from Hawaii were also among the victims of this devastating crash.
Mastrascusa had a notable career, reportedly working for Beyond, a premium travel company established by the Arnolds. Collins held the position of luxury event designer and experience curator with Beyond, demonstrating her significant role within the organization.
The crash has led to a federal investigation, with leaders from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration collaborating with state and local services at the crash site. The extreme weather conditions have challenged the investigation efforts. According to the director of Bangor International Airport, deep snow has blanketed the crash location, covering the wreckage.
As authorities worked at the scene, they managed to recover the cockpit voice and data recorders for examination. The state medical examiner’s office was also involved, tasked with the recovery and identification of the deceased victims. Currently, Bangor International Airport remains closed and is expected to resume operations no earlier than Thursday morning.
Compounding the tragedy, preliminary reports indicated that another aircraft had aborted its takeoff shortly before the Challenger 600 departed. This earlier flight communicated with the control tower, citing poor visibility and the requirement for additional de-icing. Ultimately, conditions had deteriorated, leading to the catastrophic event. During the time prior to the plane’s departure, snowfall was just beginning, but totals would eventually exceed 9.5 inches.
Before takeoff, the Bombardier Challenger 600 underwent a standard de-icing procedure, which the airport director confirmed. Despite these precautions, the eventual outcome was tragic.
The news of Collins’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Lakewood Church community. Tributes have poured in from friends, colleagues, and those who knew her from her work. She was recognized not just for her professional talents but for her exceptional kindness and the warmth she shared with others.
In times of personal loss, communities often come together, mourning the shared understanding of grief. Lakewood Church has urged its congregation to extend their thoughts and prayers to Collins’s family, emphasizing the need for support in such devastating times.
Shawna Collins will be remembered as an inspiring figure who touched the lives of many. Her contributions to Lakewood Church and the broader community will not be forgotten. As loved ones and friends reflect on her life, they express gratitude for the moments shared, the laughter, and the love she brought into their lives.
As investigations progress, the community continues to seek answers about the crash and to honor the lives lost. Collins’s beautiful spirit and the impact she had on those around her will remain a lasting legacy.
