On Friday, President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order aimed at hosting an IndyCar race on the streets of Washington, D.C. This initiative is part of the upcoming America250 celebration, as confirmed by Fox News Digital.
According to an initial report from NBC News, the race is planned to be named the “America250 Grand Prix” and is scheduled for the weekend of August 21-23. Typically, IndyCar events are held on Sundays, and currently, there are no other scheduled events for that weekend.
The executive order, details of which have yet to be released, will direct the Interior and Transportation departments to collaborate with the Mayor of Washington, D.C. They will work to design a race route that highlights the iconic landmarks of the city, particularly around the National Mall, based on information provided in a fact sheet.
Furthermore, NBC News reports, citing sources from the White House, that the relevant departments will be required to quickly obtain necessary permits and approvals for the race. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will be granted the authority to allocate available funds to support the planning and execution of the race.
Roger Penske, owner of IndyCar, expressed enthusiasm regarding the announcement, stating, “President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we’re grateful for his trust and support as INDYCAR prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle. This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation, and excellence that powers motorsports across America.”
Last week, it was confirmed by FOX Business that the Department of Transportation was advocating for an IndyCar race to take place on the National Mall as part of the America250 festivities.
In a further effort to promote the race, Trump recently shared an AI-generated video on Truth Social. The video showcased fans at the National Mall, along with drivers racing through a conceptual route in Washington, D.C.
A spokesperson from the Department of Transportation noted, “The Grand Prix is an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate our nation’s proud racing pedigree, showcase the beauty of the National Mall, and generate millions in critical tourism revenue for the capital.” This statement highlights the expected economic benefits that the race could bring to the D.C. area.
The Trump Administration is determined to enhance Washington, D.C., through initiatives like this race. The Administration is committed to working with partners in Congress to identify the positive impacts this event will bring to the District.
Nevertheless, the proposed race faces challenges; advertising is prohibited on Capitol grounds. As many racing vehicles are covered in sponsorship ads, this could pose a significant obstacle to the execution of the event.
While the exact route of the track remains uncertain, the promotional video shared by Trump prominently featured notable structures such as the Capitol, Washington Monument, and Lincoln Memorial, indicating a potential course that highlights the beauty of these landmarks.
In addition, a UFC event is scheduled for the South Lawn on June 14, which coincides with Trump’s 80th birthday, adding to the specter of high-profile events planned for the capital this summer.
As the plans continue to develop, many will watch closely how the race and associated festivities unfold as part of the America250 celebrations and what it could mean for the future of motorsports in the nation’s capital.
