Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana called on House Republicans to unite behind President Donald Trump following his recent agreement with Senate Democrats. This deal aims to prevent a prolonged government shutdown, according to information shared with Fox News Digital on Friday evening.
Despite acknowledging his frustration with the outcome, Johnson praised Trump’s deal-making skills. During a recent call with House Republicans, he emphasized the need for lawmakers to support the president’s decision as crucial negotiations took place.
The Senate on Friday passed a revamped government funding agreement that will sustain federal operations through the end of the fiscal year on September 30, although it excludes the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
This development comes after Democrats withdrew from a previous bipartisan plan, which sought full funding for the federal government. Their exit stemmed from demands for stricter oversight over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), surpassing what the original House-approved package included.
Johnson reportedly visited the White House on Wednesday to argue for adhering to the initial funding plan. He warned his colleagues that altering the agreement could lead to significant risks, cautioning that it might be akin to opening Pandora’s box.
Nevertheless, Trump reached an accord with Senate Democrats. Johnson admitted that the president had made a decisive move and asserted that Republicans must rally behind him.
The original bipartisan DHS bill contained provisions designed to enhance oversight of ICE, including requirements for body-worn cameras and comprehensive training for public engagement. However, following a tragic incident involving a federal officer and a U.S. citizen, Democrats intensified their demands for additional accountability and control measures.
The newly brokered deal would only maintain current DHS funding levels for a short duration, specifically two weeks. This temporary measure aims to ensure essential agencies under DHS continue to receive funding while negotiations over immigration enforcement unfold.
Diverse concerns permeate Republican ranks over the implications of this deal. Many lawmakers worry it might empower Democrats to limit the administration’s operational capabilities further.
During the recent lawmakers’ call, one Republican voiced apprehensions about the risks involved with the agreement. In response, Johnson reiterated his frustrations but commended Trump for his adeptness in negotiations.
Johnson stressed to House Republicans that Trump requires their backing to navigate the crucial next two weeks of negotiations with Democrats.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump remarked on his collaboration with Democrats, stating, “I am working hard with Congress to ensure that we are able to fully fund the Government, without delay.” He noted that both Republicans and Democrats had come together in a significant effort to fund the majority of the government until September. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of extending DHS funding, particularly for the Coast Guard, which he emphasized is undergoing extensive improvements.
Despite the complications surrounding the negotiations, Johnson conveyed an optimistic outlook regarding the Republican position in the discussions. He referenced how ICE had already been funded through previous comprehensive legislation. He pointed out that it might be crucial to focus on vulnerabilities within agencies like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which are poised to face funding shortages.
He suggested that any adverse outcomes could be attributed to the Democrats, suggesting that the party might bear responsibility for any fallout from these negotiations.
The House is expected to deliberate on the proposed legislation by Monday evening as lawmakers brace for the unfolding financial discussions. With pressing deadlines ahead, the Republican leadership emphasizes the importance of solidarity and strategic decision-making to navigate this complex political landscape.
