IDF Conducts Strikes in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Violations

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Saturday that airstrikes targeting Gaza were executed in response to a reported breach of a ceasefire agreement. The IDF claimed to have identified eight terrorists exiting underground infrastructure in eastern Rafah, leading to the strikes.

According to the IDF statement, the military targeted four high-ranking Hamas and Islamic Jihad commanders along with additional militants. Furthermore, a weapons storage facility, a manufacturing site, and two launch sites belonging to Hamas in central Gaza were also struck.

Hospitals operated by the Hamas-run Health Ministry reported a significant toll from these strikes, stating that at least 30 Palestinians have been killed, as reported by The Associated Press. The health officials indicated that casualties included civilians, with two women and six children among the deceased from two different families. Additionally, an airstrike hit a police station in Gaza City, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and numerous injuries, according to Shifa Hospital director Mohamed Abu Selmiya.

Strikes Follow Accusations of Ceasefire Violations

The military actions occurred shortly after Israel accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire agreement. An Israeli military official confirmed the strikes were a direct response to these violations but refrained from discussing specific targets.

This new wave of violence unfolded just one day before the Rafah border crossing with Egypt was scheduled to reopen, which many view as a critical development in the ongoing efforts for ceasefire negotiations brokered by the United States. The reopening is expected to initiate a new phase involving limited border activities, attempts to demilitarize Gaza, and discussions regarding governance in the region post-conflict.

Concerns Over Weapons Smuggling

Israeli officials have voiced concerns regarding the Rafah crossing, labeling it as a significant point for potential weapons smuggling by Hamas. Security arrangements are anticipated to accompany any reopening efforts as part of the broader ceasefire strategy.
