Prominent Democratic strategist James Carville has reiterated his recommendations for party leaders, advising them to adopt a low-key approach as he believes a decline in President Donald Trump’s popularity is in progress.
During a recent appearance on Hannity, Carville expressed his thoughts on the current political situation, suggesting that Democrats should “play possum” and let events unfold without aggressive intervention. He stated, “I’m telling the Democrats, just sit there, play possum. Let them go, let them go, let them go. Poll numbers have declined, and the collapse is already underway… Just let the ball come to you. We don’t need to be aggressive now.”
Since Trump’s inauguration, numerous demonstrations have erupted across the nation, with many Democrats participating. However, Carville believes the most effective response from Democrats would be to refrain from active engagement. As he noted, simply “do nothing” until he thinks the opportunities arise.
Discussing the best course of action for Democratic politicians, Carville suggested a strategy familiar in rural America: to play possum. This concept implies a wait-and-see attitude, allowing developments to evolve without rushed reactions. He emphasized, “Just let it go” during an interview on MSNBC’s The Beat with Ari Melber.
This stance resonates particularly in a landscape where many Democrats feel compelled to respond to Trump’s leadership aggressively. Yet, Carville believes that a more reserved approach could be beneficial in the long run.
Further highlighting his points on Hannity, Carville stated that Trump currently holds the lowest approval ratings ever recorded for a president at this juncture in their term. He referenced polling data from RealClearPolitics to back his assertion.
In contrast, Hannity presented data from CBS News/YouGov, indicating that Trump’s ratings were favorable according to some polls. This debate highlighted the ongoing divide within public opinion about Trump’s performance as president.
Despite Trump’s assertive public claims regarding his accomplishments, recent polls feature mixed signals about his approval. A Quinnipiac University survey revealed that 45 percent of respondents approve of Trump’s handling of his presidential duties, with 49 percent disapproving. This reflects a slight dip from a previous poll conducted soon after his inauguration.
Meanwhile, a Gallup poll shows Trump’s approval at 45 percent, with disapproval rising to 51 percent. Additionally, the Reuters/Ipsos survey presented similar outcomes, indicating that Trump’s overall approval rating now stands at 44 percent, with disapproval at 51 percent.
The mixed polling results reflect a country divided on opinions regarding Trump’s handling of his second term. Although some believe that the president has a robust support base, the recent data indicates challenges ahead.
Carville acknowledges that while his forecasts for former Vice President Kamala Harris did not materialize as expected, he remains critical of the current power dynamics in Washington. He stated, “We went with our seventh-string quarterback, and we lost by a point and a half. And we actually picked up a congressional seat.” His comments suggest a recognition of the complexity within the political landscape.
Carville articulated several issues on which he holds significant disagreements with the Republican Party, outlining concerns over abortion rights, tax cuts, and foreign policy decisions. His remarks suggest an ongoing struggle for Democrats to align on key issues while considering the broader implications of their strategies.
As Hannity pressed Carville about his criticisms regarding the Democratic focus on contentious topics such as transgender athletes and immigration policy, Carville appeared unconcerned. He remarked, “I’m not too worried about the high school track meet, but I am worried about people having affordable health care. That’s the difference between our two parties.”
As the political atmosphere continues to evolve, Carville’s predictions call for a cautious approach from Democrats in navigating the complexities of their opposition. With varying public sentiment regarding Trump’s presidency, the challenge remains for Democrats to rally effectively without overstating their responses.
Carville’s insights may resonate as Democratic leaders evaluate their strategies and potential pathways forward during Trump’s tumultuous term in office. The forthcoming months will likely reveal whether his approach of patience and observation pays off in shaping the future of the Democratic Party.
