Maine Athlete Commends Trump for Stance on Transgender Competitors Amid State Leaders’ Inaction

A high school female track athlete in Maine is expressing appreciation for President Donald Trump’s efforts to ban biological males from competing in women’s sports. She claims that state lawmakers have failed to address this pressing issue for female athletes.

Zoe, a participant in the shot put at Maine’s Class B state indoor championship, voiced her gratitude following Trump’s announcement to cut federal funding to Maine in response to the state’s opposition to his order. This funding cut serves as a warning to state leaders whom Zoe accuses of neglecting the interests of female athletes.

“State leaders have failed our female athletes and there needs to be repercussions for their neglect,” Zoe emphasized. “We feel seen and heard because of this announcement and hope that steps will continue to be made to protect women’s sports in Maine.”

State Championship Controversy

During the state championship meet, Katie Spencer, a competitor who previously identified as male, outperformed every female athlete by at least half a foot in pole vaulting. This key victory contributed to Greely High School’s triumph in the Class B state championship.

In light of Spencer’s victory, Trump communicated a clear message that Maine would not receive public funding until the state resolved its compliance issues. His announcement came shortly after Spencer’s win raised questions about fair competition in women’s athletics.

Call for Federal Intervention

Republican state Representative Laurel Libby highlighted the need for federal intervention after Spencer’s victory, echoing Zoe’s concerns about the lack of local support for female athletes.

Libby noted that years ago, Maine amended its Human Rights Act to protect gender identity. With Democrats now holding majorities in both legislative chambers and the governorship, Libby stated there is virtually no chance for a repeal of these protections.

Conflict with State Laws

The president’s executive order from February 5 threatens to withdraw public funding from schools that permit biological males to compete on women’s teams. The Maine Principals’ Association, which oversees high school athletics in the state, declared that this order contradicts local laws protecting human rights and will defer to those state laws regarding athletic eligibility.

Sarah Perry, a civil rights attorney with a specialization in Title IX, pointed out that the association’s refusal to comply with Trump’s order risks federal investigations. She believes that without significant changes, states could face consequences that compel them to comply with presidential mandates.

Rising Concerns Among Competitors

In comments to Fox News Digital, Libby shared an alarming anecdote from the state championship. A young female athlete expressed frustration upon discovering that they would be competing against a biological male only upon arrival at the event. This realization demoralized her and her teammates, she noted.

Libby characterized this incident as indicative of a wider problem facing women’s rights in athletics across Maine. She pointed to the increasing frequency of biological males competing in female categories as an alarming trend that, without federal intervention, could continue to escalate.

The Consequences of Noncompliance

As a result of Spencer’s win in pole vaulting, she has qualified for the upcoming multistate regional championships, effectively taking the place that would have been awarded to the second-place female competitor had Spencer entered the boys’ division.

Trump emphasized that Maine will not receive federal funding unless it adheres to his executive order, which mandates that schools and athletic organizations ensure that biological males are excluded from women’s sports teams.

Contention with State Governance

During a recent speech at the National Governors Association conference, Trump highlighted his stance on the matter. He critiqued Maine’s decision to allow biological males in women’s sports, stating, “I hate to tell you this, but we’re not going to give any federal money.
