Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed reservations on Monday regarding his endorsement of Representative Byron Donalds, a candidate touted by former President Donald Trump to succeed him in the gubernatorial race. DeSantis acknowledged ongoing speculation surrounding his wife, Casey DeSantis, potentially pursuing a run in the 2026 elections.
Although Byron Donalds has yet to officially declare his intention to run for governor, Donald Trump conveyed his support in a recent social media post, asserting that Donalds would receive his “complete and total endorsement” should he choose to campaign. Meanwhile, DeSantis appears to be discussing his wife’s political future with influential donors.
During a press conference held in Tampa, focused on announcing the establishment of Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency, DeSantis clarified his position on Donalds’ potential gubernatorial candidacy.
“Donald Trump just got into office. I want these congressmen focused on enacting his agenda,” DeSantis remarked, indicating that he believes legislators should prioritize their congressional responsibilities over pursuing campaigns. He added, “They haven’t done very much yet. They’re not putting his executive orders into place. We’ll see what they do on the spending, but we have such a narrow majority that to be trying to campaign other places and missing these votes I think is not something that’s advisable at all.”
DeSantis continued, emphasizing the success achieved in Florida under his leadership. He pointed out that Donalds has not actively contributed to the state’s victories over the past few years. “He’s just not been a part of it. He’s been in other states campaigning doing that, and that’s fine, but OK, well then deliver results up there,” DeSantis insisted. “I want to see them delivering results for the people of Florida.”
Furthermore, DeSantis noted his commitment to raising funds for the upcoming gubernatorial race, seeking a candidate who would help sustain and build on the accomplishments achieved in Florida.
DeSantis warned that complacency is a dangerous mindset for potential candidates and voters alike. “I think a lot of people think somehow the battle’s been won, and you don’t have to worry about it. We could revert very quickly. That could happen. 100%,” he cautioned. DeSantis believes that it is critical for candidates to engage in the ongoing struggles essential to Florida’s success.
He further stated, “We’ve had hundreds of thousands of people move here specifically because of the policies that we have, and I think that’s something that you should not take for granted. This is not necessarily something that just goes on auto pilot.”
When the press inquired about the possibility of Casey DeSantis entering the race, the governor refrained from providing a definitive answer but praised her political skills and dedication to conservative values. “People ask me all the time about our wonderful first lady, who has done a fantastic job as first lady of Florida,” he stated.
He added, “I will tell you this, you’re talking about somebody like her. I won by the biggest margin that any Republican has ever won a governor’s race here in Florida. She would do better than me.”
DeSantis recounted a conversation with the late Rush Limbaugh during his initial year as governor, in which Limbaugh remarked, “The only person I would rather have as my governor than you, is her.” This endorsement further solidifies Casey’s reputation as a formidable candidate.
On Thursday, Trump reiterated his backing for Byron Donalds through a post on his social media platform. He urged Donalds to run, stating, “Byron Donalds would be a truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida and, should he decide to run, will have my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, BYRON, RUN!”
In response, Donalds acknowledged Trump’s enthusiastic support, stating, “President Trump is Making America Great Again. I’m committed to working with him to Keep Florida Great. Announcement coming soon!” This statement hints at the congressman’s growing ambitions.
After addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference, Donalds refrained from making a formal declaration regarding his gubernatorial intentions. Instead, he remarked it had been an “interesting 12 hours” and advised the public to “stay tuned.”
As the political landscape in Florida continues to evolve, the dynamics between Ron DeSantis, Byron Donalds, and Casey DeSantis could shape the future of the state’s governance. Voter engagement and support among Republican candidates will be crucial as the 2026 election approaches.
