The dawn of a new NFL year is on the horizon, and franchises are on the lookout for reliable quarterback options before the draft arrives. This offseason presents teams with various viable alternatives—inclusive of both starters and seasoned veterans.
Several clubs are grappling with their quarterback situations. As a result, the upcoming free agency market appears to cater to all needs, whether teams require a dependable starter or are seeking a temporary bridge option.
Among available quarterbacks, Sam Darnold shines as a promising free-agent choice following a remarkable season with the Minnesota Vikings. Once a highly regarded selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Darnold is now positioned at the top of this year’s free agency list.
After securing a $10 million, one-year contract with Minnesota, Darnold excelled, accumulating 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdown throws, and only 12 interceptions. He achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first quarterback to secure 14 victories in his initial season with a team. Furthermore, he stands among the few quarterbacks in NFL history to record 12 games with multiple touchdown passes alongside a passer rating of 100 or higher within a season.
Despite the Vikings experiencing a rough playoff exit, Darnold still possesses the potential to emerge as a starter, whether he continues in Minnesota or explores options elsewhere.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have faced ongoing difficulties in securing a strong quarterback in the wake of Ben Roethlisberger’s 2022 retirement. Last season showcased two potential candidates, but neither proved to be a resolute answer.
One of those choices was Justin Fields, who joined Pittsburgh via trade from the Chicago Bears. Fields initially took the reins after Russell Wilson sustained an injury. However, the situation shifted as Wilson eventually reclaimed the starting role during the season’s decisive stages.
Fields concluded the season with six starts, accumulating 1,106 passing yards, five touchdown passes, and a lone interception over 10 games. The Steelers confirmed their intent to pursue one of the quarterbacks set to become available in free agency. While the choice remains uncertain, Wilson may emerge as the more attractive target if he enters the market.
Russell Wilson managed to return to the field after recovering from a calf injury sustained during training camp. He resumed as the starter for the last 11 games of the 2024 season, completing 63.7% of his attempts for 2,482 yards. His performance included 16 touchdown passes and five interceptions, along with 155 rushing yards and two scores.
Despite his impressive track record, Steelers’ team president Art Rooney II hinted that Wilson’s age might influence the organization’s decision-making process. Should the Steelers choose to let go of Wilson, he could reunite with former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who recently joined the Las Vegas Raiders.
Aaron Rodgers, who remains under contract, is likely to command a starting position should he opt to play next season. With one year left on his existing agreement, the expectation is that he will be released after the NFL’s new league year kicks off on March 12, categorized as a post-June 1 designation.
Despite the New York Jets’ struggles during the past season—even with a four-time league MVP—Rodgers managed to put up respectable statistics, throwing for 3,897 yards and completing 28 touchdown passes.
This offseason stands to be transformative for numerous NFL teams, particularly those needing to solidify their quarterback positions. With key players like Darnold, Fields, Wilson, and Rodgers potentially shifting across teams, strategic decisions will shape both the immediate future and the long-term performance of franchises.
As organizations prepare for free agency, the excitement surrounding the quarterback market continues to grow. Each option presents its unique advantages and disadvantages, ultimately influencing team strategies moving forward into the new season.
The landscape of the NFL is consistently evolving, and understanding these shifts is crucial for teams striving for success. As the clock ticks down to the commencement of free agency, all eyes will remain fixed on the quarterbacks and the pivotal role they will play in defining the upcoming season.
