On a recent podcast interview, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the challenges faced by the media when engaging with the Trump administration. She argued that the press is struggling to deal with the administration’s lighthearted approach, characterized by what she described as ‘genuinely having so much fun.’
Leavitt expressed her views during her appearance on the ‘Ruthless’ podcast, stating, ‘I think that’s something the press are having a hard time with. We are genuinely having so much fun, and this is why you’re seeing them obsess over Elon Musk and President Trump. They’re trying so hard but failing to drive a wedge in that relationship, because they love those sensational stories of trying to pin people against each other.’
Leavitt praised President Trump for his unprecedented accessibility to the media. She noted that he has consistently fielded questions from reporters. Within his first few weeks in office, Trump has taken over 1,000 questions from the press.
She continued, ‘I mean that is the most accessible president we’ve ever had, and it’s a question on every topic under the sun. Again, he did it with his entire cabinet sitting around him, showcasing transparency and accessibility. While they might not say it on air, they will tell you off the record that they are pleased with that.’
Leavitt also shared insights into the changes made to the White House briefing room and the media’s access to the administration. One significant alteration was the introduction of a new media seat dedicated to influencers and podcasters.
John Ashbrook, co-host of the ‘Ruthless’ podcast, was one of the first podcasters granted access to the briefing room. Leavitt emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, ‘This goes back to the non-traditional media strategy that Donald Trump owned and won on the campaign trail, sitting down with podcasts, influencers, comedians and owning that space because no other politician has ever done that before.’
According to Leavitt, Trump’s strategy allowed him to connect with people across the nation who might not have otherwise engaged with his message. She pointed out that, due to the biased coverage he received from legacy media, many had not truly understood who he is as a person.
She explained, ‘He was able to reach so many people across the country who otherwise would have never heard his honest message and who he really is as a person because the coverage of him has always been through the bias of the legacy media.’
Leavitt stressed that her team recognized the importance of maintaining this media strategy after Trump assumed the presidency. She remarked, ‘We felt it would have been irresponsible to not continue the strategy after Trump took office.’
The press secretary refuted claims that the Trump administration sought to cultivate more favorable coverage. She called this notion ‘laughable.’ Leavitt emphasized the current administration’s commitment to transparency, stating, ‘The legacy media is still in the briefing room. I take questions from CNN just as much as I take questions from our great conservative friends who don’t have seats in that room, who have to stand on the sides for hours just to have a spot in there.’
She concluded with a bold assertion about their administration, describing it as the ‘most transparent,’ further asserting that both Trump and she are unafraid to engage with questions from anyone.
In her remarks, Leavitt highlighted that the Trump administration values engagement with all media outlets, regardless of their political leanings. This position aims to promote an open dialogue and transparency that she believes are pivotal to effective governance.
