California Assembly member Bill Essayli is actively working to advance legislation aimed at prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. This legislative effort comes amidst a series of contentious incidents in the state surrounding the inclusion of trans athletes on women’s teams.
On February 14, Essayli formally introduced the bill, highlighting an ongoing debate that has caught national attention. As a leading Republican figure in Sacramento, he contends that recent controversies have transformed the discussions into a vital civil rights issue which resonates with individuals of diverse faiths.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Essayli emphasized that the concerns extend beyond traditional religious beliefs. He expressed, “Not just for Christians, but also from Muslims and Jewish Americans, people of faith possess strong values regarding the concept of two genders and divine creation.” He further described the situation as partly a religious civil rights issue.
Since 2014, California laws have supported the inclusion of transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s competitions. However, the state now faces pressure from various political angles, notably following former President Donald Trump’s recent directive aimed at prohibiting biological males from participating in female sports.
The district represented by Essayli, Riverside, has become a focal point in this dialogue due to a high-profile incident where a transgender cross-country runner allegedly displaced a female student from a spot on the varsity team at Martin Luther King High School. This incident led to a lawsuit that highlighted tense comparisons between “Save Girls Sports” shirts and swastikas.
Recent events in regions such as San Diego and the Bay Area exemplify how trans athlete-related controversies have emerged across Democrat-led states. Significantly, public sentiment has shown that a majority of Americans, even within the Democratic Party, oppose the inclusion of trans athletes in girls’ sports. Yet, many party leaders continue to advocate for these policies.
Essayli outlined a concerning pattern, suggesting that the current stance represents a broader agenda aimed at undermining family structures and substituting them with governmental influence over children’s values. He articulately stated, “These tactics seem designed to gain control over upcoming generations of American voters.”
According to Essayli, the implications of this policy not only affect female athletes but also create challenges for transgender students themselves. He posited that these individuals are misled into believing that identifying as female grants them equal rights and privileges in sports, which may ultimately lead to discomfort and conflict within competitive environments.
“If a biological boy identifies as a girl and enters a female locker room, it could create awkwardness for all involved. We should consider alternative solutions, like separate sports teams or facilities for transgender individuals,” he recommended.
In the short term, the Democratic support for trans inclusion in sports has emerged as a crucial vulnerability for the party during this election cycle. A recent survey conducted by The New York Times and Ipsos found overwhelming public disapproval for allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. The results revealed that 79% of respondents believe biological males who identify as females should be barred from participating in women’s athletics.
Among those identifying as Democrats, 67% expressed similar concerns. Another survey conducted by Gallup last year corroborated these findings, indicating that nearly 70% of Americans feel biological men should not participate in women’s sports.
The ramifications of this issue may reach beyond sports, possibly influencing electoral outcomes. According to a national exit poll recently revealed by the Concerned Women for America legislative action committee, 70% of moderate voters regarded Trump’s position against transgender athletes as a crucial issue, with 44% rating it as
