A.J. Brown is enjoying a remarkable sixth season in the NFL, marking it as one of the most significant years of his career. As an All-Pro wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, he has achieved a third consecutive 1,000-yard season, playing a pivotal role in the team’s pursuit of a Super Bowl title.
Before his NFL journey, Brown established himself as a standout player in college football, amassing nearly 3,000 receiving yards during his time with the Ole Miss Rebels. Yet, despite his football success, there was a period when Brown considered a different athletic career.
Brown showcased his dual talents in both football and baseball at Starkville High School in Mississippi. His prowess in baseball was further highlighted when he participated in the 2015 Under Armour High School All-America Baseball Game, a prestigious event designed for the nation’s top high school players.
However, it was the overwhelming skill of the pitchers he faced during this game that made him reconsider his career path. Brown recalled moments from that game, expressing concern about the velocity of the pitches he encountered.
In a recent interview on the podcast “Million Dollaz Worth of Game,” Brown shared a defining moment that influenced his choice to pursue football. He vividly remembered standing in right field during the All-America game in Chicago when he recognized the intensity of competition around him.
“I’ll tell you when I made the decision to play football. I’m in right field. I’m in the All-America game in Chicago. The first was like 97 mph — 97 off the rip? I’m usually facing like 85,” Brown explained. His reflection on witnessing such powerful pitching solidified his decision to focus on football instead of baseball.
Brown further noted, “We still in high school, though. So, these are all high school players, and these guys are probably gonna go first round.” He felt compelled to evaluate his chances of making an impact in baseball, acknowledging the challenges he faced when competing against such talented peers.
Despite his decision to focus on football, Brown attracted interest from Major League Baseball teams. In 2016, the San Diego Padres selected him in the later rounds of the draft. Despite this opportunity, Brown chose to continue his education in Mississippi, prioritizing his football career.
His time at Ole Miss marked a transformative period, as he earned first-team All-SEC honors twice, showcasing his incredible talent on the football field.
Stephen Moritz, an area scout for the Padres, reflected on scouting Brown a decade ago. He recognized the star’s elite athleticism, noting, “You’re never certain. As scouts, you’re wrong more often than you’re right. But I was as certain as I could be [that] he was going to be a good outfielder. There was too much athleticism. There was natural ability.”
Moritz highlighted Brown’s talent, stating, “You add all his tools together, that was the one thing I was pretty confident in. This dude is going to be a good outfielder in the big leagues.” His insight underscores the potential that Brown had to excel in baseball had he chosen that path.
In a conversation about the influence of baseball on his performance as a football player, Brown emphasized the skills he acquired on the diamond. He remarked how catching a football benefited from the techniques he learned in baseball.
“You catch the ball with your eyes,” Brown elaborated during an interview with ESPN. “Baseball really helped me out with that for football. When you’re tracking a ball, especially a deep ball, it helped me a lot.” His background as a center fielder provided him with essential skills for tracking passes in football. He drew parallels between making a deep catch in football and judging the path of the baseball.
The Tennessee Titans recognized Brown’s exceptional talent and selected him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. After an impressive start to his NFL career, he was traded to the Eagles during the 2022 NFL Draft, further cementing his status as a top-tier player.
As he continues to make an impact in the NFL, Brown’s journey serves as a testament to the importance of making choices that align with one’s passions and strengths.
In retrospect, Brown’s decision to focus on football was guided by both his experiences on the field and the insights he gained throughout his athletic career. While he could have excelled in baseball, his commitment to football has led to remarkable achievements, including his recent successes with the Eagles.
A.J. Brown’s story illustrates the dynamic nature of sports talent and the critical decisions that shape an athlete’s career. As he continues to prioritize football, fans and analysts alike eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for this accomplished player.
