Championing Fair Competition in Women’s Sports: A High School Athlete’s Perspective

Championing Fair Competition in Women’s Sports: A High School Athlete’s Perspective

Recently, I participated in a vital roundtable discussion focused on the protection of women’s sports. This meeting, attended by Attorney General Pam Bondi and various state attorneys general, meant a great deal to me as a passionate athlete representing my home state of Maine.

It was disheartening, however, that my own state’s attorney general did not attend, nor did the attorneys general from the other states represented by the five female athletes. Their absence stands in stark contrast to our commitment to defend the rights and opportunities of girls and women athletes across the nation.

While public officials may shy away from advocating for female athletes, we remain resolute. We stand up for ourselves, for our teammates, and for the generations of female athletes who will follow in our footsteps.

We are invigorated by crucial support from the public, Attorney General Bondi, and notable figures, including President Donald Trump, who advocate for our right to compete.

Challenges in the Face of Gender Identity Politics

As a dedicated three-sport varsity athlete involved in soccer, Nordic skiing, and track and field in Maine, I was dismayed by Governor Janet Mills’ recent remarks. She intends to challenge the executive order that prohibits biological males from competing in women’s and girls’ sports, a move that contradicts the need for fair competition.

Understanding the dedication required to excel in sports is crucial. Young female athletes spend countless hours honing their skills and striving toward the pinnacle of athletic achievement. Personally, winning a state title in track and field was a highlight of my journey, showcasing the reward for perseverance.

The Distinct Challenges of Competition

Nordic skiing introduced a new layer of competition for me. When I learned that a biological male would compete against me, I adjusted my goals, focusing on outperforming my competitor. This determination is a hallmark of an athlete’s spirit; however, competing against transgender athletes is an overwhelming and inequitable challenge.

Research shows that biological males maintain physical advantages that significantly impact performance in sports typically designated for females. Regardless of effort, female athletes cannot compete on an equal footing with their male counterparts, undermining the fairness that should be a cornerstone of competitive sports.

When the effort of female athletes goes unrecognized due to unfair competition practices, the pursuit of excellence suffers. Policies that allow biological males to compete in women’s sports shift the standard to an unrealistic and unattainable level.

The Reality of Sports Inequality

It is unjust to disregard the hard work put forth by female athletes, as allowing men into women’s athletic competitions ultimately harms the very essence of what women’s sports represent. These policies seem to transcend support for women in the realm of athletics; instead, they threaten to eliminate opportunities and accolades earned through dedication and hard work.

Numerous female athletes pour their hearts into training, only to find their achievements jeopardized by the inclusion of biological males in their categories. The emotional toll manifests deeply; feelings of defeat often accompany the realization that competing against a person with undeniably advantageous physical attributes renders one’s efforts ineffective.

Preserving the Essence of Women’s Sports

Every female athlete deserves to engage in a fair playing field where unique strengths and capabilities are celebrated rather than overshadowed. As a person of faith, I believe that every individual possesses inherent worth. Recognizing the biological differences between men and women does not diminish the value of women but rather underscores the need for dedicated spaces where female athletes can excel without facing competition that does not align with their physical realities.

This is why I’m raising my voice. It is essential that future generations of female athletes inherit a space where their accomplishments and identities as women athletes are both recognized and honored. Every girl deserves the opportunity to showcase her abilities without the looming presence of unfair competition.

Looking Toward the Future of Women’s Sports

The future of women’s sports hangs in the balance. States pursuing policies that undermine the integrity of female athletics will instill fear among young girls. For them, the fear is that their efforts may be disregarded, which can lead to a loss of confidence in their abilities to compete.

We must fight for fairness in sports. This battle extends beyond individual athletes; it is a collective effort to ensure that women and girls maintain their rightful place in the athletic world.

Though I had hoped for greater support from my governor, the focus on female athletes appears to not be a priority for the state leadership. Governor Mills’ stance indicates a concerning trend that could jeopardize opportunities for many female athletes.

Restoring Fairness in Women’s Sports

Even amid these challenges, I remain hopeful. I believe that advocates for female athletes, including the president and a multitude of supportive coaches, parents, and officials, will restore sanity and fairness to women’s sports.

Opportunities for women and girls must be safeguarded. It is time to confront the notion that allowing biological males to compete in women’s events is equitable. The simple truth is that biological males should only participate in their designated divisions.

Our commitment to fair competition in women’s sports will shape the future for all athletes. We are on the front lines of this essential conversation, and our collective voices will resonate for generations to come.
