A disgraced Instagram influencer has stirred up controversy within Australia’s wellness community by spreading fraudulent health claims, leading to renewed outrage a decade later. Belle Gibson, known for her misleading narratives, has evaded accountability for years.
Gibson’s online health blog catalyzed one of Australia’s largest scams, generating significant anger from the public and victims alike. In recent developments, a gripping Netflix limited series entitled ‘Apple Cider Vinegar’ has brought her story back into the spotlight.
The series details Gibson’s journey from single motherhood to international fame in 2013. Initially, she chronicled her alleged battle with terminal brain cancer, offering updates to her followers and even announcing her recovery from the disease.
She leveraged her fabricated success story to promote her recipe app and cookbook, ‘The Whole Pantry,’ which notably garnered 200,000 downloads from the Apple Store within just one month. In a twisted turn, Gibson claimed that some of the proceeds would be donated to charity and to the family of a child battling cancer.
In 2015, Gibson confessed to an audience that she had never actually been diagnosed with terminal cancer. This shocking revelation marked a turning point, exposing her as a fraud to her devout fans.
Two years later, Australian authorities discovered that a mere 2% of her profits had been donated as promised. Australia’s Consumer Affairs Victoria determined that Gibson had violated consumer law, leading to a federal court order mandating her to pay back a total of 410,000 Australian dollars, equivalent to approximately 261,000 US dollars, and prohibiting her from making further health claims.
In a letter to the court, Gibson acknowledged her joblessness and inability to pay the fines. Despite these claims, Australian law does not permit her to refuse payment based on financial distress. As a result, authorities may pursue additional measures to collect the debt.
After eight years, the quest to collect the fines from Gibson is ongoing. Authorities have yet to confirm whether any funds have been recovered from her.
Consumer Affairs Victoria continues to act on the court order. A spokesperson stated, ‘Consumer Affairs Victoria has continued to undertake actions to enforce the debt owed by Annabelle Natalie Gibson under court order.’ Meanwhile, Gibson has not responded to inquiries for comment.
While justice for Gibson’s actions remains elusive, her fraudulent schemes have led to broader implications within Australia. Following public outcry concerning Gibson’s misleading claims, officials in 2022 revised the country’s therapeutic health claim regulations.

He believes the series unethically imitates his family’s experience by using fictional characters. Ainscough described the show as ‘insensitive and clearly profit-driven.’
Netflix has not provided a comment regarding these concerns.
Though Belle Gibson’s saga of deceit looks far from finished, Australian authorities reiterate their unyielding pursuit of justice more than ten years after her misleading claims first surfaced. According to a spokesperson for the Victorian Government, a significant portion of Gibson’s actions has hurt numerous businesses and individuals.
The spokesperson concluded, ‘We won’t be giving up, and we want justice for those impacted. The fine will not lapse, and Ms. Gibson will be pursued by the relevant agencies.’
