As the race for New York City mayor heats up, Andrew Cuomo is unveiling several public policy proposals. The former governor, who held office for three terms, resigned in 2021 amid various scandals. On Monday, he presented the second component of his public safety agenda aimed at improving the nation’s largest city.

It has been just over a week since Cuomo announced his candidacy to challenge the current mayor, Eric Adams, who is also facing growing scrutiny. Cuomo’s entrance into an already crowded race has shifted dynamics, with only four months remaining before the Democratic primary election that will likely decide the victor of the November general election.
Recent polling indicates a decline in support for Adams, correlating with his relatively low approval ratings among constituents, while juxtaposed against Cuomo’s rising candidacy—an unexpected twist in the electoral landscape.
With Cuomo’s near-universal name recognition among New Yorkers, he found himself leading in the mayoral polls even before formally entering the race on March 1. Thanks to substantial financial backing from a well-funded super PAC, Cuomo has maintained his position as the frontrunner in the latest polls conducted by Quinnipiac University.
The polling data revealed that Cuomo secured 31% support among registered Democrats in New York City, significantly ahead of Adams, who garnered just 11%. Following Adams, other contenders such as Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and former Comptroller Scott Stringer lagged behind in single digits.
In stark contrast, Adams faces an approval rating that plummeted to just 20%, marking the lowest for any New York City mayor in over 30 years according to Quinnipiac’s historical trends.
