A woman is safe today after her quick thinking helped avert what could have been a tragic kidnapping incident at a gas station in Utah.

Bravery Unfolds at Cedar Band Travel Plaza

Authorities from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of 53-year-old Epigmenio Bustillos Marquez following the alleged kidnapping attempt. The incident occurred at Cedar Band Travel Plaza, located about seven miles southwest of Cedar City.

On March 8, at approximately 1:30 p.m., police received reports of a kidnapping in progress. A witness at the gas station became suspicious after the victim discreetly handed her a note indicating she was in danger and required assistance.

Witness Intervenes

According to court documents, the quick actions of the bystander proved pivotal. The witness saw the woman enter a white Chevrolet Equinox with Nevada plates. Understanding the urgency of the situation, she followed the vehicle as it merged onto Interstate 15 and began heading north.

Law enforcement quickly located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Upon interaction, deputies noticed that the female victim, whose identity has not been released, displayed signs of distress and appeared to be acting unusually when they asked her to leave the car.

Suspect’s Evasive Behavior

The driver, now identified as Marquez, attempted to provide identification from Durango, Mexico, using a false name and date of birth. Investigators later discovered a second ID card in his wallet, revealing his actual name and information. However, he continued to deny its authenticity, raising further suspicions.

A Toxic Relationship Unveiled

The victim disclosed to the police that she had been in a relationship with Marquez for about 25 years. However, she reported a recent shift in his behavior, describing him as erratic. The day of the incident, she requested Marquez to drive her to work. Instead of proceeding to her workplace, he confronted her with accusations of infidelity.

When the victim expressed her desire to leave the vehicle, Marquez allegedly made disturbing threats. He stated that she would die if she attempted to exit their speeding car and confiscated her phone to prevent her from reaching out for help. In a shocking escalation, he reportedly struck her in the mouth during the ordeal.

Legal Consequences Await the Suspect

Following the incident, Marquez was booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault. He also faces additional charges, including misdemeanor assault, providing false information, interruption of a communication device, prohibited use of an ID, and operating a vehicle without a valid license or permit.

Marquez is currently being held without bail as he awaits a pretrial hearing, reflecting the seriousness of the charges against him.

Authorities Respond

In light of this incident, law enforcement emphasizes the importance of community vigilance and encourages individuals to report anything suspicious. The rapid response of the witness and the deputies played a crucial role in ensuring the woman’s safety.
