The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a student from the University of Pittsburgh, has taken a troubling turn as authorities reportedly found her clothing on a beach in the Dominican Republic. This new development raises further concerns about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
On Tuesday, multiple police sources revealed to ABC News that the clothing belonging to Konanki was located on a portable beach bed in close proximity to the area where she was last seen. This discovery has triggered a renewed push for answers amid an escalating search effort.
According to La Policia Nacional, which serves as the Dominican Republic’s national police force, Konanki disappeared after entering the beach early Thursday morning. She was lodging at the five-star Riu Republica Resort in Punta Cana, traveling with a group of six female students from Pitt.
Prior to her disappearance, witnesses reported seeing Konanki walking along the beach with her friends. Three officials in the Dominican Republic confirmed that most of the group returned to the resort that night; however, one person stayed behind with her until the early hours of March 6. An investigative police report details this concerning incident.
Dominican authorities are currently scrutinizing one of Konanki’s friends in their ongoing investigation. They aim to validate the account provided by a young man who claimed to have entered the water with her. According to him, the rough surf led him to feel unwell, prompting him to return to shore, leaving Konanki behind.
In an alternate version of the story, he suggested he left Konanki in knee-deep water before losing consciousness on the beach. He later reported seeing her walking before he fell asleep, a narrative attributed to Noticias SIN’s coverage.
As the search continues, Dominican officials disclosed their belief that Konanki may have tragically drowned. Despite this theory, the man last seen with her is not presently considered a suspect. According to ABC News, police have yet to discover any evidence of foul play or violence linked to her disappearance.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees the area where Konanki resides, is actively collaborating with U.S. law enforcement agencies. They are considering all avenues as the investigation unfolds. A spokesperson mentioned that authorities remain open to every possibility regarding her case.
The hotel where Konanki stayed has issued a statement affirming their full cooperation with local authorities. An emergency protocol was activated to take necessary precautions in light of the ongoing situation.
Various agencies have pledged their participation in the search, including the Dominican Republic Civil Defense, local firefighters, national police, the Dominican Navy, and the Indian embassy in the Dominican Republic. These coordinated efforts reflect the urgency and importance of locating Konanki.
In a significant move to further assist in the search, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has filed for a Yellow Notice through INTERPOL. This type of notice serves as a global alert that aids in locating missing individuals.
The University of Pittsburgh Police Department has also stepped in, partnering with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office to lend resources and support for the ongoing efforts in finding Konanki. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares expressed optimism during an interview, noting a commitment to gather more information.
He emphasized that while all of Konanki’s friends have been located, the concerns for her safety remain paramount. Miyares stated that it is heart-wrenching for her family and that they are dedicated to finding her, hoping for a resolution that leads to her safe return.
Sudiksha Konanki, originally from India, is a legal permanent resident in the U.S., residing in Loudoun County, near Washington, D.C. She stands at 5 feet 3 inches tall, with distinctive black hair and brown eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was reportedly wearing a brown bikini, hoop earrings, bracelets, and an anklet.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are committed to unraveling the circumstances that led to Sudiksha Konanki’s disappearance. As the community and agencies continue their search, they hope for her safe recovery amidst the challenging situation.
