During a recent visit to the New York state Capitol, Tom Homan, the border czar under former President Donald Trump, issued a clear warning to jurisdictions that declare themselves as sanctuary cities. He cautioned these communities to make room for federal enforcement or risk increased presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in their neighborhoods.
New York’s legislative framework imposes strict limitations on local and state law enforcement’s cooperation with ICE detainers. This means authorities cannot hold individuals solely based on their immigration status. Additionally, the controversial “Green Light Law” permits undocumented immigrants to acquire valid driver’s licenses within the state.
Homan’s remarks came as he stood alongside Republican lawmakers inside the state Capitol, where he reaffirmed his commitment to prioritize the deportation of high-risk individuals, labeling these sanctuary policies as direct threats to both federal agents and public safety.
He firmly urged local authorities to voluntarily grant access to jails for immigration enforcement, emphasizing that sanctuary policies will not hinder the Trump administration’s deportation agenda.
As Homan expressed his views, he characterized non-compliance with federal immigration authorities as detrimental. He asserted that the lack of cooperation from jurisdictions like New York could result in more ICE agents on the ground instead of fewer.
“New York, you are not going to stop us. Change your sanctuary stance, or get out of our way. We are prepared to escalate our enforcement efforts if necessary,” Homan stated. He illustrated that if policies hindered individual officer actions, his team could expand their resources to apprehend offenders more effectively.
Homan was particularly critical of New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat who claims to support the deportation of criminal trespassers but has frequently denounced many of Trump’s immigration initiatives. Homan remarked on her contradictory statements, suggesting she was not genuinely committed to the cause.
“She talks about deporting criminal aliens, yet simultaneously supports barriers that prevent it. This is deeply concerning,” he said.
Highlighting the risks associated with the release of individuals deemed public safety threats, Homan stated, “Letting such individuals back into the community is simply unwise; it’s a matter of common sense. Your policies have pushed us into your neighborhoods, as access to detention facilities has been denied. All we want is to ensure community safety.”
Assemblyman Matt Slater, a Republican present during Homan’s address, expressed support for federal initiatives aimed at enhancing national security and public safety. He conveyed a sense of relief knowing there are federal leaders like Homan who stand firm against dangerous sanctuary policies.
“Director Homan delivered a powerful message today: New York’s policies that protect criminal immigrants and the Green Light Law are no longer viable,” Slater noted.
As of publication time, Governor Hochul had not responded to requests for comment regarding Homan’s statements and criticism of her administration’s immigration policies.
The conflict between federal immigration enforcement and state sanctuary policies continues to deepen. Homan’s strong statements shed light on the ongoing struggle between local jurisdictions aiming to protect their immigrant populations and federal agents tasked with enforcing immigration laws.
As discussions around immigration policy evolve, many anticipate significant legal and political battles over sanctuary jurisdictions. Homan’s visit to New York serves as a stark reminder of the unresolved tensions and the potential consequences facing communities that resist cooperation with federal immigration initiatives.
