Cooper Kupp, the standout wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP from 2022, is set to join the Seattle Seahawks following his release from the Los Angeles Rams early this week. Reports indicate that Kupp has signed a three-year contract worth $45 million, marking a significant change in his career.
Kupp, originally from Washington, will reunite with Seattle’s new quarterback, Sam Darnold. This move fills a crucial gap for the Seahawks after the recent trade of DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kupp’s experience and skills are expected to bolster the Seahawks’ receiving corps.
In a social media update last month, Kupp expressed that the Rams were actively seeking a trade to secure his future and competitive prospects. Despite his hopes, the Rams were unable to facilitate a trade, ultimately leading to his release.
The 32-year-old veteran shared his disappointment regarding his departure from Los Angeles. He felt a deep connection to the team and community, stating that he always believed his career would start and finish in L.A.
Kupp’s journey has not been easy in recent years. Since achieving a receiving Triple Crown in 2022 and capturing the Super Bowl MVP title, he has faced persistent injuries. Over the past three seasons, he has participated in only 33 out of 51 possible games. Although he remains a talented player, Kupp has seen his role diminished, overshadowed by rising star Puka Nacua.
Kupp entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick for the Rams in 2017 after an impressive college career at Eastern Washington. During the 2022 season, he amassed 145 receptions for an impressive 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. Despite these achievements, his performance has trended downward, with only 710 receiving yards last season—the lowest since 2018.
Due to ongoing injuries, Kupp has not surpassed the 1,000-yard mark since his iconic 2022 season. His absence in over 12 games after that year highlights the physical challenges he has faced.
Kupp expressed gratitude for the community in Los Angeles, thanking fans for their support and stating, “I have taken so much pride in playing alongside my teammates for the LA community.” He remained hopeful as he looked toward the future, declaring that 2024 started with one of his best training camps. Kupp emphasized his determination to play elite football in the coming years.
Joining the Seahawks, Kupp will team up with upcoming wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. As Darnold embarks on his first season with Seattle, having a seasoned veteran like Kupp will provide stability and guidance for the offense.
The future appears bright for Cooper Kupp as he embarks on this new chapter with the Seattle Seahawks. His skills and experience promise to enhance the team’s prospects in the upcoming seasons. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as he strives to make a significant impact on the field once again.
