A recent survey reveals that over half of Americans are not completely honest with their dentists about their dental habits. The survey, conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Aspen Dental, polled 2,000 American adults to examine their approaches to dental hygiene.
The survey highlights the complex emotions surrounding dental appointments. Many Americans experience fear, anxiety, and discomfort, which can often lead to procrastination in seeking dental care. This hesitance can contribute to neglecting essential oral health routines.
According to the survey, a striking 60% of respondents admitted they aim to impress their dentists during visits. This desire leads 57% of individuals to exaggerate or fabricate details about their dental hygiene practices. Interestingly, 48% believe their dentists can see through their deception, showcasing a disconnect between patient perceptions and reality.
Feeling guilty about dishonesty is prevalent, with 64% of respondents expressing remorse. Among the generations surveyed, Millennials and Generation X reported the least guilt regarding their dental fibs compared to older Americans.
