Yolanda Saldívar, the woman who killed beloved Latin music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, recently generated controversy with her claims about their final confrontation. As Saldívar becomes eligible for parole at the end of this month, her family provided new insights into her perspective on the tragic events of March 31, 1995.
An unnamed relative of Saldívar shared her thoughts in an exclusive interview with a prominent news outlet. The family member disclosed, “[Yolanda] acknowledges her wrongdoing. She takes responsibility for her actions but insists her response was influenced by how Selena allegedly confronted her.”
This assertion suggests a complex dynamic during their last encounter. According to the family, Saldívar maintained that Selena confronted her aggressively, leading to a rapid escalation of emotions. The family member stated, “If Selena had approached her differently, things might have ended differently. Everything happened so fast.”
Selena, who fans affectionately called simply Selena, was shot fatally by Saldívar after discovering that Saldívar had embezzled around $30,000 from her clothing boutiques. Saldívar has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that she did not steal from the singer.
In a 2024 prison interview featured in an Oxygen docuseries titled ‘Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them’, Saldívar reiterated her claims. During the interview, she stated her intention was not to harm Selena, insisting that she desired to end her life instead. The tragic incident unfolded when the gun unexpectedly fired, striking the 23-year-old star.
Saldívar expressed, “It startled me. I did not know my gun went off. I did not know that it hit her. The incident scared both of us. There was never any intention to harm her.” Throughout her statements, Saldívar emphasized her regret over the tragic outcome.
She reflected on her actions, stating, “My decisions were mine, and their consequences are something I live with every day. I regret everything that happened. If I could turn back time, I would genuinely change many things. I miss Selena as much as her fans do. I believe I will see her again in heaven.”
Saldívar’s comments have led to significant backlash from fans and the Quintanilla family. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla, voiced severe criticism of the documentary. He claimed it contained nothing but lies and asserted that the public would not believe Saldívar’s narrative.
“No one is going to believe what she has to say anyway,” Abraham stated, reinforcing the notion that Saldívar’s assertions lack credibility. “Everyone knows there is zero truth to anything that comes from her mouth,” he contended.
In her interview, Saldívar suggested that she has faced a trial by public opinion long before she even reached trial. She feels that societal judgment has followed her throughout her incarceration. Currently, Saldívar is serving her sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, having applied for parole, while her eligibility date approaches on March 30, 2025.
According to reports from her family, Saldívar has a place to reside, although questions remain about her future employment prospects. A family member articulated concerns regarding her reintegration into society, questioning who would be willing to hire her given her notoriety.
Inmates at the Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas, where Saldívar is incarcerated, reported that she is currently housed in protective custody. This precaution stems from her status as a high-profile inmate. Other inmates expressed how well-known she is, with one individual stating that there has been a bounty on her head while in prison.
Marisol Lopez, who served her time alongside Saldívar, remarked, “Everyone knows who Yolanda Saldívar is. There is significant animosity toward her. The guards isolate her for her safety, as she would undoubtedly face threats in general population.”
The tragic loss of Selena continues to resonate with her fans around the world. A national outpouring of grief continues even decades after her untimely death. This ongoing love and remembrance highlight not only the impact she made during her lifetime but the enduring legacy that transcends her tragic ending.
As Yolanda Saldívar approaches her parole eligibility, her claims will likely remain contentious, igniting further conversations about accountability, loss, and the ongoing impact of Selena’s music and life story. The public will continue to watch Saldívar’s case closely, weighing past actions against future possibilities.
