PITTSBURGH, Pa. – As students returned to the scenic University of Pittsburgh campus after spring break, the absence of one peer was notably felt. Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old pre-medical student, disappeared more than a week ago and remains unaccounted for.

In light of Konanki’s mysterious disappearance during her trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Fox News Digital reached out to various university students to discuss the implications for spring break safety and their views on international travel.

Students expressed their plans for enhanced safety measures following the troubling incident involving the Virginia resident.

“I think it’s such an unsettling thought that it could happen to anyone, especially since friends of ours were at the same resort when it occurred,” stated Bailey Wagenknecht, a junior marketing student. “This situation could literally happen to anybody.”

Wagenknecht, along with her friend Olivia Lee, a sophomore business student, mentioned that their group had contemplated an international trip but ultimately chose to stay closer to home.

“We discussed who would be traveling together and made sure we were informed about safety practices in that kind of environment,” Wagenknecht explained.

Lee added, “While safety concerns do linger in the back of your mind when planning these trips, we shouldn’t allow them to discourage us from traveling. Instead, we need to be more cautious and alert.”

Robert Beckman, a first-year business student, reflected on his experience of traveling to Myrtle Beach during spring break the previous year. He emphasized the importance of being surrounded by trustworthy friends, especially in unfamiliar places.

“Being with a group of people you’re comfortable with can provide a safety net, particularly when you’re far from home,” Beckman shared. He also noted it was challenging to persuade his parents to let him travel.

First-year business student David Eymer reiterated the significance of the buddy system when traveling. He recalled his family’s insistence on always having someone nearby, especially in unknown territories.

“Having someone you can trust nearby is crucial, and it is important to avoid wandering off alone in new environments,” Eymer advised.

Junior interdisciplinary studies student Kate Wentzler shared her perspective after enjoying spring break in Spain. She emphasized the shocking nature of Konanki’s disappearance, highlighting how such tragic events can occur anywhere, including their own community.

“It’s heartbreaking to think that something like this could occur close to home,” Wentzler remarked. “The reality is that unfortunate events can happen anywhere, regardless of location or preparation.”

Despite the unsettling circumstances surrounding her disappearance, Wentzler conveyed that she would still consider visiting the Dominican Republic. However, she strongly advised fellow students to formulate a safety plan and adhere to it rigorously.

“Planning individual safety measures, such as who to spend time with on specific nights, is more relevant than the destination itself,” Wentzler clarified.

Aubrey Coward, a first-year pre-pharmacy student, articulated a personal shift in perspective following Konanki’s disappearance. She admitted that she would avoid traveling alone in the future.

“Although I may not have the means for an extravagant vacation, when I do travel, my parents have always urged me to stay with trusted friends and avoid leaving with strangers. Always travel in groups,” Coward emphasized.

Konanki, who went missing on March 6 during her vacation in Punta Cana, was last seen on a beach near the Riu República Hotel, where she was vacationing with friends. The search for her has involved extensive efforts by Dominican authorities, including aerial and underwater searches.

Authorities have not found any evidence of foul play, leading them to believe that she may have drowned. Her family has since petitioned for her to be declared legally deceased.
