Reports of vandalism and violence towards Tesla owners are on the rise as more victims share their troubling experiences. These incidents appear to be fueled by anger directed at the company’s CEO, Elon Musk.
Abigail Gill, a Tesla owner from Wichita, Kansas, recently experienced such vandalism while dining out with her family. As they returned to their vehicle, they discovered deep scratches marking the body of the car. Security footage revealed a man, identifiable by his distinctive pajama bottoms, keying Gill’s Tesla.
Gill, who relies on her Tesla for mobility due to her use of a wheelchair, expressed her feelings on Fox & Friends. She described the incident as a deeply saddening and disappointing action.
She has been quoted $7,000 for repairs. Although community members have offered assistance to cover the costs, Gill firmly believes the responsibility lies with the individual who committed the act.
It is uplifting to see the community come together, especially during times when innocent people suffer from vandalism, she noted. Yet, it is crucial to emphasize that only the perpetrator should bear the financial burden.
Recent protests against Tesla and Musk have escalated, particularly concerning his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency. This office has initiated cuts to various federal programs and jobs, leading to increased ire among certain groups.
Vandalism reported has ranged from keying to graffiti, and in some extreme cases, even arson. The situation has become severe enough that the FBI recently announced the formation of a task force to investigate violence against Tesla owners.
Another Tesla owner, Josh Hazel, has faced similar hostility while participating in a Mardi Gras parade this month. He described how individuals aggressively approached his Cybertruck, targeting him and his wife, who was seated in the passenger seat.
Dramatically, a man threw a heavy bead necklace, hitting Hazel’s wife and causing damage to the window trim. Despite these experiences, Hazel remains steadfast in his loyalty to the brand. Tesla vehicles, he insists, are remarkable, and he highly recommends them even in circumstances like the one he faced.
Hazel, along with Gill, has filed police reports regarding these incidents. Law enforcement has already made three arrests tied to Tesla-related acts of vandalism, including those involving Molotov cocktails. The FBI, in response to these growing threats, is treating the attacks as a form of domestic terrorism.
Kash Patel, the FBI Director, confirmed on social media that those responsible for these attacks would be pursued and brought to justice, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Despite these stern actions, the FBI’s task force has also faced criticism. Some lawmakers, such as Rep. Daniel Goldman from New York, have suggested that the creation of this task force represents a politically motivated action benefitting Musk.
Goldman tweeted his concerns, implying that former President Trump is using government power to defend Musk, creating a task force to tackle adversaries of Musk’s influence.
For Tesla owners like Gill and Hazel, this issue transcends politics and speaks to a fundamental concern regarding safety. Gill highlighted this perspective, stating that the vandals are not impacting Musk in any meaningful way; instead, they are harming families through damaging their vehicles.
Amidst the chaos, the shared sentiment among Tesla owners is the call for safety and accountability. They hope that as public awareness of these incidents grows, it will lead to a more supportive environment for Tesla drivers, free from violent hostility.
The community responses to these crises underline the importance of solidarity in the face of adversity. Offers for financial support to cover repair costs reveal how deeply people care for their neighbors and the safety of their community members. No one should have to endure the harm inflicted by others due to misplaced anger.
As demonstrations and incidents of vandalism continue to unfold, it is crucial for the authorities to act decisively while also ensuring that justice is served. The hope remains for a future where individuals feel safe driving their vehicles without the threat of violence looming over them.
For now, Tesla owners like Gill and Hazel remain vigilant, hoping that their experiences can foster understanding and curb the escalating aggression directed at them.
