Stephen A. Smith, the outspoken sports commentator and ESPN host, has revealed that he is seriously considering a run for public office in the coming years, if he believes a victory is achievable.
Known for his dynamic presence in both sports and political commentary, Smith previously dismissed the idea of running for president. He attributed the growing speculation to a perceived desperation among Democrats for strong leadership. However, during a speech at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas, he indicated that recent events have shifted his perspective.
In a post on social media platform X, he emphasized the importance of being open to new possibilities. He stated, “Time to stop messing around. Life is great, especially at ESPN/Disney. I hate the thought of being a politician, but I’m sick of this mess. So I’m officially leaving all doors open.”
At the NAB event, Smith shared insights about his discussions with various political figures. He mentioned, “Over the last few weeks, I’ve had no choice but to get more serious about it. I’ve been approached by people on Capitol Hill. I’ve been approached by people who are elected officials in office, whether it’s governors or mayors or what have you. People have legitimately, seriously, asked me about it.”
Despite his reluctance to enter politics, Smith made it clear that if he sees a legitimate path to victory, he will consider a run for office. He reiterated, “I have no desire to be a politician. My life is going pretty well, but I’ve decided that I’m no longer going to close that door. I’m gonna keep my options open. I’m going to entertain the possibility.”
Smith painted a picture of his potential candidacy by suggesting what might motivate him to run. He remarked, “If it comes in late 2026 or 2027, where I look at this country and think it’s an absolute mess and there’s legitimate reason to believe—whether through exploratory committees or anything else—that I indeed have a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States, I am not going to rule it out, and I’m not playing.”
In addition to contemplating his future, Smith expressed critical views on the political landscape itself. According to reports, he stated, “I personally perceive politicians as professional beggars. You always have your hand out, and people need something in return.” This insight reflects a broader frustration he has felt as he navigates increasing interest in his potential political career.
He added that as more people have encouraged him to consider running for office, he has had to take these discussions more seriously. He noted, “I had to get a little more serious about it.”
Smith mentioned that should he decide to pursue a political career, he would spend time familiarizing himself with pivotal issues. He stated, “I would need to hunker down for a couple of months to study the various issues, but I would look forward to debates.”
Imagining himself on a debate stage with prospective candidates, Smith maintained a confident outlook. He remarked, “Imagine me on a debate stage with these people, these politicians. This is what I do for a living. I am not a politician. I don’t have a political record for them to lean on. I can challenge what you literally say as politicians.”
Smith also acknowledged that while he might not have the same political experience, he could offer a different perspective, stating, “They would all know more than me at this particular time, but they have a record to address.”
With a tinge of humor, he cautioned potential opponents, saying, “They better hope I’m not interested, I’ll tell you that much. I don’t like any of the prospective candidates right now.”
As speculation continues, all eyes will remain on Smith to see whether he decides to enter the political arena, potentially reshaping the landscape of future elections.
