A federal judge in Seattle expressed concern that President Donald Trump’s rhetoric may incite threats against federal judges. U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik, who was appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1998, shared his thoughts during an interview.
Judge Lasnik emphasized that while criticism of judicial rulings is acceptable, it becomes problematic when judges are labeled as radical left-wing extremists. He noted, “It breeds threats of violence against judges.” Such statements can create an atmosphere of hostility that affects not only judges but also their families, he added.
Reflecting on his role, Lasnik recalled the need to support fellow federal judges dealing with backlash after blocking Trump’s executive orders. He said, “Right away, they were subject to a lot of hostility online. I tell them, ‘I feel for you, and especially for your families.’ It’s not easy for the families to see what your reaction is and to worry about their own safety.” This sentiment highlights the personal toll that public criticism can have on the judiciary.
