Fred Couples continues to defy age with remarkable performances on the golf course.
The 65-year-old golfing legend made his 40th appearance at the prestigious Masters Tournament on Thursday, showcasing his enduring talent during the event’s opening round.
During the first round, Couples demonstrated his skill on the 14th hole. Positioned in the fairway and 191 yards from the pin, he struck a remarkable shot. The golf ball soared, landing gracefully on the green before rolling directly into the hole for an eagle.
The crowd erupted in applause as Couples celebrated the moment, pumping his fist and kissing his club in sheer joy.
Couples’ eagle was not an isolated highlight. He also impressed spectators with another stunning shot on the par-four first hole. Positioned off the green and 16 yards from the hole, Couples made an unconventional decision to use his putter.
He executed a well-placed shot, rolling the ball up the hill and onto the green. His technique paid off as the ball maintained its speed, rolling into the hole for a birdie.
After completing the first round, Couples found himself at one-under par, an achievement that left him in contention for the cut as the tournament progressed. Notably, he became the second-oldest golfer to finish under par at the Masters at 65 years of age, following Tom Watson, who accomplished this feat at 66 in 2015.
In 2023, Couples made history by becoming the oldest player to make the cut at the Masters, achieving this milestone at 63 years, six months, and five days. His impressive record includes 31 cuts made at Augusta National, a feat surpassed only by Jack Nicklaus, who leads with 37.
Throughout his illustrious career, Couples has amassed 11 top-10 finishes and 20 top-25 finishes in the Masters. Remarkably, he has completed 72 holes in this major tournament across five different decades, a testament to his longevity and consistent performance.
The 2023 Masters marks a significant milestone for Couples, as he joins an elite group of golfers. With 40 starts in this prestigious event, he becomes the 15th player in history to reach this mark.
With each tournament, Fred Couples reinforces his reputation as a golf icon. His ability to compete at a high level, even at an advanced age, inspires fans and fellow players alike.
As he continues to participate in the Masters, golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate what more Couples will achieve in the rounds to come.
