EXCLUSIVE: Freshman Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has reached the pivotal milestone of his first 100 days in office, sharing his insights and legislative ambitions in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital. Moreno, who made headlines by defeating Ohio’s long-serving Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, provides a glimpse into his whirlwind initial days and outlines what he aims for the GOP-controlled Senate to achieve in the coming months.
Moreno characterized his early experiences in Washington as a whirlwind, noting the rapid pace at which events unfold. He remarked, “It’s been a whirlwind. Obviously, President Trump is moving at 100 mph, and my hope is that Congress matches that same urgency and speed. Voters expect action, and we need to deliver it.”
Since taking office, Moreno has been an active lawmaker, cosponsoring 67 bills and introducing eight original pieces of legislation. He underscored the importance of swift legislative action and expressed optimism about seeing some of his initiatives progress through Congress.
Among his legislative priorities is the Transportation Freedom Act, legislation that aims to streamline standards for the auto industry. Moreno explained the bill’s significance by stating, “The auto industry is at a critical juncture. Current regulations from the Biden administration and California impose standards that manufacturers struggle to meet.”
He further elaborated, “Our bill aims to establish one unified set of standards for the entire country and maintain those standards for ten years. This consistency will provide manufacturers like Ford and GM with the clarity they need to make informed decisions about their vehicle production for the next decade. This could significantly lower automobile prices.”
Illegal immigration remains a high priority for Moreno as he looks to address ongoing challenges. He mentioned his Rules Act, which aims to reform the broken asylum system, describing it as a “low hanging fruit” that aligns with Republican values and benefits constituents.
Since his swearing-in, Moreno has actively engaged with his constituents across all 88 counties in Ohio. He has participated in more than 30 interviews with local media and hosted over 500 Ohioans for coffee discussions in Washington, D.C. Additionally, he has authored 16 letters addressing various issues pertinent to his constituents.
Reflecting on his predecessor, Moreno stated, “My opponent, Sherrod Brown, epitomized the type of politician people have grown to dislike. He seemed more concerned with collecting a paycheck than with actual accomplishments. During his 30-year career, he managed to pass just six bills, many of which were simply naming post offices.” He emphasized his commitment to making tangible progress during his term.
Looking ahead, Moreno shared an ambitious legislative agenda he hopes the GOP Senate will tackle over the next 100 days. He aims to ensure that the Trump administration’s agenda remains robust and effective as the midterm elections approach.
He stated, “I want to ensure we pass a robust reconciliation bill that safeguards Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits while simultaneously lowering costs. I believe we can achieve this through strategic technology implementation and state-directed work mandates for able-bodied Americans. Most people expect this kind of leadership.”
In addition to healthcare reforms, Moreno expressed the necessity of reevaluating foreign aid. He argued, “We need to cut funding for USAID to around 40-50 billion dollars—a significant amount that could be better invested in domestic priorities. Restructuring these funds will help support Americans rather than overseas projects that do not yield tangible benefits for our citizens.”
Moreover, Moreno indicated a need to make tax reforms permanent to prevent a significant tax increase for American taxpayers in the future. He believes, “Making the 2017 tax reform permanent will protect citizens from a projected four-and-a-half trillion dollar tax hike.”
Additionally, Moreno emphasized the importance of codifying DOGE cuts into law, ensuring their permanence. He concluded by stating, “If we can successfully achieve our legislative goals, combined with the current administration’s trade policies and focus on border security, I firmly believe we can enter a golden age for America by the end of this year—one that our nation has never experienced before.”
