Karen Read’s statements outside the courtroom, particularly those featured in popular true-crime television programs, are set to significantly influence her second murder trial regarding the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe. This information comes from new filings presented in court.
Read is accused of using her Lexus SUV to run over O’Keefe just after midnight on January 29, 2022, and subsequently leaving him to die in freezing conditions as a blizzard descended upon New England.
The couple reportedly had a heated argument earlier that day. They then spent several hours drinking together and were allegedly involved in a confrontation outside a residence hosting an after-party for fellow officers. Read has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following a deadlocked jury in her first trial last year, preparations for a new trial have commenced.
Prominent Massachusetts defense attorney Hank Brennan, who assumed responsibility for the case following the first trial’s mistrial, has taken steps to further investigate Read’s public statements. He has requested subpoenas for unpublished transcripts from interviews involving Read. These recordings include comments that did not make the final cut in both television and print media.
In a recent court document disclosed on Monday, prosecutors indicated that Read had made numerous statements to various individuals. These include first responders, medical personnel, family members, and journalists. Additionally, recorded comments from O’Keefe’s cellphone are part of the investigation. Prosecutors noted, “These statements range from the defendant’s immediate impressions and state of mind in the minutes and hours surrounding John O’Keefe’s death to crafted narrations, sometimes in the presence of counsel that recount for the defendant’s version or impressions of events months and years after the murder.”
After the jury’s failure to reach a unanimous decision in July, Read began a media tour that attracted substantial attention. She opened her home to a magazine writer for a weekend and participated in several local and national television interviews. During these appearances, she claimed that law enforcement colleagues of O’Keefe were orchestrating a frame job against her. In a striking statement, she expressed that she would have “cheered” the O.J. Simpson verdict if it were announced today.
Critics of Read, including relatives of the lead investigator who was dismissed from the Massachusetts State Police due to misconduct allegations connected to her case, have criticized her media presence. They describe her actions as an “unrelenting propaganda” campaign aiming to divert attention from incriminating evidence against her.
An accompanying discovery filing details some of the evidence Brennan’s team has provided to her defense. Alongside various interview transcripts, the documents include episodes from
