Teen Suspect in Austin Metcalf Murder Relocated for Safety Amid Threats

The 17-year-old accused of fatally stabbing Frisco, Texas track star Austin Metcalf has been relocated to a secure setting for his protection. This development comes in response to serious safety concerns expressed by a family advocacy group.

A statement from the Next Generation Action Network has confirmed the relocation of Karmelo Anthony to an undisclosed location. This move aims to ensure his immediate safety following an alarming surge in violent threats and acts of harassment targeting his family’s home.

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing Metcalf over a seating dispute during a high school track meet in Frisco on April 2. Following a recent court decision, his bond was significantly lowered from $1 million to $250,000, allowing for his temporary release from Collin County Jail.

In light of the rising threats, the NGAN highlighted various incidents of intimidation faced by the Anthony family. Reports indicate that individuals have been seen loitering around their residence, taking photographs, and making unwanted food deliveries aimed at disturbing the family. Furthermore, receiving a mailing containing Metcalf’s obituary has heightened the distress surrounding this case.

“We are sharing images and documentation of the threats the family has faced this past weekend to raise awareness of the dangerous atmosphere that has been created,” the NGAN stated. They attributed this hostile environment to organized hate, systemic racism, and misinformation.

Dominique Alexander, president of the Next Generation Action Network, voiced deep concerns about the level of hatred being perpetuated in society. He stated, “It is both heartbreaking and infuriating to see the depths of hate and bigotry still alive and well in our society. No family should have to live under siege simply for asserting their constitutional rights. We will be proactive in protecting this family and pursuing justice without intimidation.”

In a separate response, the Frisco Police Department clarified that they have not received any reports of threats against the Anthony family, in contrast to the claims made by the advocacy group.

Last week, Alexander convened a press conference where Anthony’s mother, Kayla Hayes, spoke publicly for the first time since her son’s arrest. During this gathering, Austin Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, attempted to participate but was quickly escorted off the premises by police.

At the beginning of the conference, Alexander criticized the presence of Jeff Metcalf. He remarked on the situation, saying, “What we witnessed at the onset of this press conference was a disrespect to the dignity of his son.”

Alexander emphasized that the NGAN has respected the tragedy of lost life and refrained from sharing opinions about the incident. “We have kept our viewpoint close and have not targeted anyone in our remarks. Our focus has been on honoring the dignity of life and loss,” he asserted.

Additionally, Alexander touched on issues of race during the conference. He argued that individuals involved in similar incidents should receive equal treatment under the law. “He should have the same rights afforded to other cases where individuals claimed self-defense,” he stated, referencing high-profile cases like that of Kyle Rittenhouse.

As the conference progressed, tensions escalated. Notably, that evening saw Jeff Metcalf’s home subjected to a swatting incident, further escalating the strife surrounding the case.

Over the following weekend, a rally titled ‘Protect White Americans’ took place in Frisco. The rally was organized by Jake Lang, recognized for his past involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot. During a phone discussion, Jeff Metcalf reportedly admonished Lang for increasing racial tensions.

Metcalf’s comments aimed to promote unity rather than division, asserting, “You’re trying to create more race divide than bridging the gap.”

As the pressure surrounding the case continues, Metcalf has attempted to moderate the political narrative surrounding the tragedy. He has firmly stated, “I want to clarify something right off to start because I’ve already heard some rumors and gossip. This was not a race incident. This is not a political matter.”

He insisted that those involved should focus on the human aspect of the situation rather than turning it into a political issue. His statements reflect a concern for the long-lasting implications on both families involved.

Reports indicate that Karmelo Anthony confessed to the stabbing as he was arrested by a school resource officer shortly after the incident. According to police accounts, Anthony stated, “I’m not alleged. I did it” when initially detained.

Moreover, during his arrest, he expressed concern for Metcalf’s condition, inquiring whether the victim was “going to be OK” and questioning if his actions could be viewed as self-defense.

Call for Unity Amidst Turmoil

This tragic case not only raises questions about violence and safety in schools but also reflects deeper societal issues surrounding race, systemic injustice, and community response. As the legal process unfolds, ongoing dialogue will be vital for both healing and achieving justice.

As community members grapple with this devastating event, the calls for unity, understanding, and respect for all parties involved remain critical in navigating the complex realities of the situation. The actions and approaches taken from here will shape the narrative and future responses to similar incidents.
