Father Will Straten, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Center at Texas A&M University, shared insights with the National Catholic Register. He noted that the growth at his parish became particularly noticeable after the pandemic began to recede.

“Some of these individuals were Protestants, some identified as nonreligious, while others were Catholics who had never actively practiced their faith,” La Grange elaborated. He highlighted the diversity among converts, stating that they range from those who come from affluent backgrounds to those facing financial hardships.

La Grange finds joy in this busy time as a priest. He explained, “It’s a fun time to be a priest. It’s busy, in a good way.” He emphasized that many young adult converts feel an urgency to seek moral guidance, recognizing that the contemporary world often lacks it.

A young woman from Manhattan, Sydney Johnston, shared her spiritual journey after growing up in a nondenominational Christian home. She recalled her thought process during this exploration, saying, “I had this question in my mind: do I feel God here? Does this feel like a holy place? I paid close attention to the aesthetic and spiritual aspects of the services.” Johnston expressed that she felt most drawn to the Catholic Mass due to its rich traditions and historical roots.

She emphasized the beauty of Catholic rituals, stating, “There’s something so beautiful and transcendent about the rituals and the ancient history in the Catholic Mass that’s been preserved. The church communicates a sense of reverence that I didn’t find in more liberal, laissez-faire approaches seen in nondenominational churches.”

Taylor New, a 27-year-old native of Cincinnati, attributed her conversion to a YouTube video that explored the history of Catholicism. She humorously remarked, “I joke that that video ruined my life in the best way, because it set me on a path of intense research.”

Leaving her previous faith community was challenging, yet New noted a growing trend among her peers. She stated, “A lot of young people are converting to the faith, and I think that’s simply due to an abundance of online resources. People are searching for truth, and this quest seems to lead them to the Catholic Church.”

The Influence of Digital Faith Leaders

Adrian Lawson, a 30-year-old software developer from Southern California, shared his transformative experience as well. Originally raised in a nondenominational environment, he transitioned to atheism during his teenage years. His conversion to Catholicism was sparked by watching a debate between a Catholic and a Protestant YouTuber, which ended with the Protestant influencer becoming Catholic.

Despite facing considerable opposition from his parents, Lawson began attending Mass in 2022 and completed his conversion a year later. He described the positive impact of prayer, stating, “Since I’ve started praying the rosary regularly, I haven’t experienced anxiety, depression, or panic attacks.”
