New Jersey Implements Emergency REAL ID Appointments as Airlines Issue Urgent Travel Alerts

The mandatory REAL ID requirement is set to become effective on May 7, which will necessitate a new form of identification for Americans flying domestically. Travelers must prepare for this change to ensure smooth passage through security checkpoints.

Alternative forms of identification will still be accepted for travel without a REAL ID. Valid U.S. passports and passport cards, Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler cards like Global Entry, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards, and border crossing cards can be used. Recently, New Jersey’s Department of Motor Vehicles (NJDMV) experienced a high volume of demand for REAL ID appointments. Reports indicated no available appointments on various days across the state’s scheduling portal. This situation reflects the broader trend seen across the nation as the deadline approaches.

On Wednesday afternoon, a slight improvement was noted with two appointments becoming available in New Jersey.

In response to the overwhelming demand, New Jersey has announced the launch of an emergency issuance program for REAL IDs, starting Thursday. This initiative is designed for qualified individuals who need to fly domestically within 14 days due to urgent circumstances or life-or-death reasons, and who currently lack an acceptable form of ID to pass through TSA security.

Latrecia Littles-Floyd, Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator, stated that the initiative aims to address the heightened demand for REAL IDs across the state. She emphasized, “Anticipating the recent increase in demand, we have made many additional accommodations to service as many customers with REAL ID as possible, including with this new emergency program.”

This emergency program will continue beyond the May 7 deadline and is designed for a limited number of qualified customers, as noted in the press release. To expedite the processing, an $80 fee for shipping services will be required.

All across the nation, DMV offices are actively working to meet the surge in demand. Many are even extending hours or implementing special Saturday events focused on REAL ID processing. This effort is crucial for ensuring that all travelers have the proper identification by the deadline.

Airlines and airports are also doing their part by issuing public service announcements to remind travelers about the upcoming requirement. Tampa International Airport took to social media, emphasizing, “HEADS UP, TRAVELERS: If you plan to fly out of TPA soon, check your ID now. Beginning May 7, travelers at airports nationwide will need to have identification that complies with the federal REAL ID Act.”

LaGuardia Airport in New York similarly urged travelers to secure their REAL ID as soon as possible. Meanwhile, United Airlines provided important guidance, stating, “If you won’t have one by that date, you can bring your passport or another acceptable form of ID instead. Just remember – without identification that’s REAL ID-compliant, you may get delayed at screening or possibly won’t be permitted through TSA’s security checkpoint, so plan ahead.”

Delta Airlines also reinforced the importance of arriving at the airport with valid identification. A spokesperson noted, “Delta people will work on a case-by-case basis to rebook customers who miss flights due to extenuating circumstances once at the airport.” This assurance adds some comfort to nervous travelers afraid of potential disruptions due to ID issues.

Notably, Daniel Velez, spokesperson for TSA New England, confirmed that the agency will be fully prepared to enforce the REAL ID requirements when the deadline arrives. Velez mentioned that the TSA’s policy will not see any extensions, intensifying the urgency for travelers to secure their REAL ID or alternative identification.
