A prominent Democrat has addressed accusations of neglecting a constituent whose son was abducted by the Venezuelan military while she was publicly advocating for another case involving a Salvadoran deportee. The controversy centers around Senator Patty Murray from Washington state, who has faced criticism for her advocacy efforts during a sensitive situation involving American hostages.
On a recent Monday, a spokesperson for Senator Murray stated they do not have a record of any correspondence from Scott St. Clair, the father of the missing soldier, seeking assistance for his son who has been imprisoned. Scott St. Clair’s son, Joseph St. Clair, an Afghanistan War veteran, went missing last November while undergoing treatment for PTSD in Colombia.
Reports indicate that in February, Scott St. Clair received a call from the Colombian consulate, confirming that his son had been taken hostage by the regime of Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s authoritarian leader. This revelation has drawn significant media attention and public outcry.
Senator Patty Murray, who previously held the position of third in line to the presidency, has reiterated her commitment to family support. Her spokesperson emphasized that constituent service remains a priority for the office. They noted, “Our office has no record of an inquiry from the St. Clair family; however, our staff is ready and willing to help support the return of Joseph however possible.” This comment follows allegations from Scott St. Clair that he had received no help from Murray’s office regarding his son.
Despite the controversy surrounding her advocacy for other cases, the Senator’s commitment to protecting due process in America remains strong. Murray’s office has stated her intention to denounce perceived injustices, including actions by the Trump administration.
In a recent social media update, Senator Murray retweeted a photo of Senator Chris Van Hollen with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran deportee, while pledging her support for his cause. Murray asserted, “In America, we don’t send people to foreign prisons for life with no trial and no due process. We’ll keep fighting. This is about protecting our democracy.
