Deion Sanders’ Advice to Young Quarterbacks Takes Center Stage After Shedeur’s Draft by the Browns

Shedeur Sanders’ long-awaited journey into the NFL commenced on a high note Saturday afternoon. The Cleveland Browns seized the opportunity to trade up in the fifth round and draft Sanders as their new quarterback. In a moment filled with significance, Sanders took to social media to express his gratitude with a heartfelt message, stating, “Thank you GOD.”

Coincidentally, the attention around Shedeur’s draft became intertwined with the past comments of his father, Deion Sanders, who is also the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. Deion had previously shared some pointed advice regarding the pressures and challenges aspiring quarterbacks might face, and those sentiments resurfaced shortly after Shedeur was selected by the Browns.

In a social media post from March 2018, Deion Sanders warned promising quarterbacks to be wary of joining the Browns, saying, “I love what the @Browns have done this offseason but if I’m a young QB, ain’t no way I’m going to Cleveland. I would pull an Eli Manning if possible.” This statement drew comparisons to Eli Manning’s dramatic entry into the NFL, where he steadfastly refused to play for the San Diego Chargers after being drafted as the first overall pick in 2004.

Manning’s family was pivotal in navigating his draft situation, ultimately leading to him joining the New York Giants. Deion echoed similar sentiments about Shedeur and fellow player Travis Hunter, suggesting that a calculated approach might be necessary during their respective draft journeys.

Despite his cautionary advice, Deion Sanders clarified his position regarding his son’s path. He affirmed that he wouldn’t dictate where Shedeur lands in the draft, stating, “No, because that’s not God’s will right now. I want Shedeur to do what he’s consistently done — excel against all odds.” His comments came during a March appearance on The Skip Bayless Show, where he further expressed how criticism can serve as motivation, saying, “I like the hating. I like the naysaying. I like the ignorance, because it makes us feel better about what we do. It gives him another chip on his shoulder.”

In the wake of Deion’s remarks, the Browns made some interesting choices. Just a month after his 2018 post, they picked quarterback Baker Mayfield as the top overall selection. This decision turned heads in the football world, and it highlights the unpredictable nature of NFL drafts and player selections.

Notably, this isn’t the first instance where Deion Sanders’ social media comments did not unfold as envisioned. In May 2023, he confidently stated that Shedeur would emerge as a top-five pick in the upcoming draft. He playfully challenged critics on X, declaring, “He will be a top 5 pick. Where yo son going? Lololol I got time today.” However, the recent draft revealed that Shedeur did not secure a top-five position, amusingly leading to a note on the original post reflecting that reality.

Sanders’ performance during the 2024 season showcased his impressive skills. He threw for an impressive total of 4,134 yards, demonstrating his growth as a quarterback. However, the transition to the NFL comes with its own set of challenges, especially as he prepares to join a crowded quarterback lineup in Cleveland.

The Browns currently feature notable names like Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel. Watson faces uncertainty after reinjuring his Achilles tendon in January, sparking speculations about his availability for the entire 2025 season, despite his own reassurances that he intends to be ready for play.

Flacco has made a comeback with the Browns after a previous season with the Indianapolis Colts. Meanwhile, Cleveland secured Pickett through a trade earlier this year. In a surprising move, the Browns opted to draft Gabriel instead of Sanders in the third round, raising questions about their quarterback strategy moving forward.

As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Shedeur Sanders and how he navigates his new role within the team. The pressure is palpable as he competes for a position amidst a well-established roster. Fans and analysts alike will undoubtedly monitor his performance and how he adapts to the challenges of professional football.
