The official cause of death for the Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, has come to light following an official autopsy report released two months after their deaths.
According to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, the findings shared with Fox News Digital indicate that Hackman had a substantial medical history, including congestive heart failure. The autopsy also revealed severe chronic hypertensive changes affecting his kidneys.
Significantly, Hackman had a bi-ventricular pacemaker implanted in April 2019, highlighting the actor’s longstanding health issues. Additionally, the report noted neurodegenerative features consistent with advanced Alzheimer’s disease.
The autopsy detailed severe atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease present in Hackman’s system. Medical documents confirm that he underwent procedures involving the placement of coronary artery stents and a bypass graft in the past. Furthermore, a prior aortic valve replacement was part of his comprehensive medical history.
Investigators noted that remote myocardial infarctions were evident, particularly affecting the left ventricular free wall and the septum. These areas were significantly impacted. A closer examination of Hackman’s brain revealed findings consistent with advanced-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
Upon analyzing Hackman’s toxicology report, it was discovered that he tested negative for the Hantavirus. Notably, carbon monoxide levels in his system measured less than 5% saturation, which falls within a normal range. However, trace amounts of acetone were found in his blood at the time of death.
Acetone is a solvent that can result from various metabolic processes and is often seen in cases of diabetic-induced ketoacidosis or prolonged fasting. Hackman’s toxicology showed levels of acetone at 5.3 mg/dl, significantly higher than the reported normal endogenous levels that are typically around 0.3 mg/dL.
The findings indicated that these acetone levels correlate with a state of extended fasting.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa were discovered deceased in their home on February 26, prompting an urgent investigation. Maintenance workers Jesse Kesler and Roland Lowe Begay made the grim discovery. Kesler, who had known the couple for over a decade, reportedly called 911 after noticing the condition of the actors’ bodies.
A search warrant affidavit obtained by Fox News revealed that Arakawa was discovered showing signs of decomposition, including facial bloating and mummification in her hands and feet. Hackman exhibited similar signs of decomposition, exacerbating concerns regarding the nature of their deaths.
Initially described as suspicious, the circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths prompted New Mexico authorities to undertake a detailed investigation. Detectives reported that neither Hackman nor Arakawa exhibited visible external trauma, yet the nature of their demise warranted further inquiry.
Investigators found a pattern of concerning online research on Arakawa’s computer. It revealed multiple searches related to COVID-19 and flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to their deaths. An email sent by Arakawa to her massage therapist on February 11 referenced Hackman undergoing a COVID-19 test after experiencing flu-like symptoms. This raised additional questions about their health conditions leading up to the tragic incident.
The report indicated Arakawa actively sought information about medical issues connected to COVID-19, revealing a concerning awareness of their symptoms.
Arakawa’s cause of death was determined to be hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a disease known to be transmitted from rodents to humans. This syndrome presents with flu-like symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, cough, nausea, and in severe cases, can lead to cardiac or respiratory failure. New Mexico Department of Health’s Chief Medical Investigator, Dr. Heather Jarrell, emphasized the serious nature of the hantavirus during a press briefing.
Tragically, Gene Hackman was 95 years old, while his wife was only 63 at the time of their passing, leaving a significant void in both their personal lives and the entertainment industry.
The passing of Gene Hackman marks a somber moment in Hollywood history as the celebrated actor leaves behind a legacy defined by impressive performances and an enduring influence on the film industry. The details shared in the autopsy underscore the complexity of his health challenges in the final years of his life.
As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths continues, it serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and health. Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa will be remembered not only for their roles in film but also for their shared journey through life’s ups and downs.
