OTTAWA – In a significant turn of events, the governing Liberal Party, which previously lagged behind the official opposition Conservatives in polls, seems poised to secure a fourth consecutive term in office. Analysts attribute this unexpected momentum to President Donald Trump’s provocative threats against Canada’s economy and sovereignty.
Angus Reid, founder and chair of the Angus Reid Institute, remarked how polls indicate a likely Liberal government, emphasizing the surprise element of a Conservative victory in this context.
Earlier this year, a poll by the Angus Reid Institute revealed that the Conservatives held a commanding 45% support, while the Liberals trailed at 11%. However, a subsequent poll released just recently showed Liberals at 44%, gaining a narrow four-point lead over Conservatives, who are at 40%.
The political atmosphere in Canada shifted dramatically following significant leadership changes. Reid noted that Canadians expressed dissatisfaction with the Liberals’ policies and Justin Trudeau’s leadership. However, this discontent transformed as Trump assumed office, igniting discussions on national sovereignty.
This change was further highlighted when Trudeau announced his resignation as prime minister and Mark Carney stepped into the role. As a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Carney brings extensive experience to the leadership position.
