In a stunning display of power, Brandon Nimmo smashed a grand slam, matching a franchise record by driving in nine RBIs. His performance played a pivotal role as the New York Mets overwhelmed the Washington Nationals with a score of 19-5 on Monday.
Nimmo demonstrated his offensive prowess by belting not just the grand slam but also a three-run home run during his seventh career multihomer game. The 32-year-old outfielder’s explosive outing included four hits and four runs scored, significantly improving his batting average from .192 prior to the game.
The Mets wrapped up the four-game series with this victory, earning a split. This win marks their ninth victory in 11 games, propelling them to an impressive 20-9 overall record, the best in Major League Baseball.
Other Mets players also contributed to the rout. Jeff McNeil and Mark Vientos each hit home runs, combining for a total of 21 hits by the Mets. Vientos particularly shined with a three-run bomb against Nationals infielder Amed Rosario in the ninth inning.
Despite the offensive output from New York, the Nationals managed to score a couple of home runs of their own. James Wood and Nathaniel Lowe each hit a homer in the eighth inning while seeking to rally their team. However, it was clear that the Mets were in complete control throughout the game.
New York initially held a 3-0 lead when reliever Colin Poche came in relief of Nationals starter Trevor Williams, who suffered his third loss of the season. Nimmo capitalized on the opportunity, punishing a 2-0 fastball that soared deep into the right-center field.
In the seventh inning, the Mets loaded the bases once again. Nimmo faced pitcher Cole Henry and delivered a crushing grand slam, the second of his career. This impressive display of power further highlighted his importance to the team and helped seal the win.
Nimmo’s two-run double in the eighth inning brought his RBI count to nine, allowing him to tie the franchise record previously established by Carlos Delgado back on June 27, 2008, during a doubleheader against the New York Yankees.
Jeff McNeil, who made his return to the lineup after missing 25 games due to a right oblique strain, added to the excitement by hitting his first home run of the season. He launched the first pitch of the fifth inning deep into right field, a testament to his quick return to form.
On the mound, Griffin Canning delivered an impressive five-inning performance, allowing only four hits. This marks Canning’s fourth consecutive win, setting a personal record in his six-year career.
Jose Urena also made his mark, earning his first save of the season despite allowing five runs in three innings as he debuted with the Mets. Meanwhile, Williams executed a season-high performance, giving up five runs over 5 1/3 innings.
Nimmo’s sixth-inning homer revealed a turnaround for the outfielder, who was previously in a slump, hitting only 7 for 47 with no extra-base hits during his last 12 games up until this match.
Looking ahead, the Mets’ left-hander David Peterson will take the mound on Tuesday as they begin a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals will send lefty MacKenzie Gore to face the Philadelphia Phillies in their upcoming three-game series.
This game represents not just a big win for the Mets but also a significant moment in Brandon Nimmo’s career, marking a record-setting performance that fans will remember for years to come.
