Former college football coach Nick Saban recently entertained a crowd at the University of Alabama’s commencement ceremony by recounting a humorous anecdote from the Crimson Tide’s visit to the White House during President Donald Trump’s first term. The event took place on Thursday night before the president addressed the graduating students.
In 2018, Alabama triumphed over the Georgia Bulldogs in a dramatic overtime victory after trailing 13-0 at halftime to secure the College Football National Championship. Following this remarkable win, tradition called for the team to celebrate their achievement with a visit to the White House.
As Saban took the stage in Tuscaloosa, he reflected on the memorable experience, noting that Trump was a gracious host during their visit. Saban also highlighted that Trump was the first president who welcomed the team back into the Oval Office to congratulate them in person.
During his speech, Saban shared an amusing moment that occurred while they were in the Oval Office. He explained that he had brought three captains of the team along for the visit and described a striking box adorned with a red button that sat prominently on Trump’s desk. Saban recalled the light-hearted exchange that ensued when one of the players asked whether that button was used to launch missiles. The president responded jokingly, encouraging the player to push it and discover its purpose.
As Saban recounted the story, he emphasized that the player hesitated, clearly reluctant to take the president’s suggestion seriously. However, Trump persisted in his playful banter.
Ultimately, former Alabama linebacker Rashaan Evans mustered the courage to approach the desk. He pushed the red button, which astoundingly prompted a staff member to enter the room carrying a tray with a Coke, much to everyone’s amusement.
Saban concluded his remarks by expressing deep gratitude to Trump for selecting the University of Alabama as the venue for his commencement address and for taking the time to speak with the graduates. His appreciation was evident, showcasing the connection between the university and the former president.
Thursday’s speech marked the official start of the commencement ceremonies at the university, which would continue on Friday. Graduates and attendees alike appreciated the blend of humor and heartfelt moments as they celebrated this significant milestone in their lives.
This lighthearted recollection serves as a reminder of the fun moments that can happen even in formal settings, bridging the worlds of sports and politics.
As celebrations continue, the legacy of Alabama’s football program remains strong, shaped by significant experiences like this visit to the White House.
